The PS5 does not support PS3 game discs, and Sony’s disc-format guidance also rules out PS2 games. Some games from those generations appear in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog; availability and whether a title can be downloaded or streamed depend on the game and your region. Sony describes the catalog’s classic PS3 games in the US as streaming-only.
Do PS2 or PS3 discs work on PS5?
No. Do not insert a PS2 or PS3 disc expecting the PS5 to play it. Sony’s compatibility guidance says, “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Sony’s safety documentation for an earlier PS5 model family also says PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 format software cannot be played from disc. The practical distinction is that PS5 backward compatibility primarily concerns PS4 games; it does not make older-generation discs compatible.

How to play eligible PS2 and PS3 classics on PS5
Use the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. The exact title must be listed for your region, and the available action shown on its listing determines whether it can be downloaded or streamed. Sony requires the appropriate PlayStation Plus membership for catalog access. Its US catalog page describes classic PS3 titles as streaming-only, so do not expect to download those games or play them from an owned PS3 disc.

- From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Go to Benefits, then open Classics Catalog.
- Find the game and open its listing. Choose Download or Stream if that option is offered for the title.
Sony’s support instructions specify a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming. That is the stated minimum requirement, not a recommended speed for every connection or a guarantee of uninterrupted play. Sony’s cloud-streaming page provides separate recommendations by resolution and lists supported countries; check it for your location and the current service requirements.

What to check before subscribing or troubleshooting
- Look up the exact game in your region. Catalog membership is title- and region-dependent; a game mentioned in a US listing may not be available where you live.
- Check whether the listing says Download or Stream. The available route is title-specific, and Sony describes classic PS3 games in the US Classics Catalog as streaming-only.
- Confirm the required membership and streaming support. Sony requires the correct PlayStation Plus membership for Classics Catalog downloads or streams. Cloud streaming is limited to supported countries and select titles.
- If streaming, check your connection. Sony states 5 Mbps minimum broadband speed for streaming; its cloud-streaming page gives resolution-specific recommendations.
For streamed PS3 games, the DualSense touchpad also handles the older controller’s Select and Start buttons: press the left side of the touchpad for Select and the right side for Start. Click the touchpad rather than tapping it.
