To bowl an inswinging yorker to a right-handed batter, aim for the feet or the base of the stumps, present the seam for inward movement, and keep your release and follow-through aligned with that target. Treat the grip and starting line below as coaching cues—not a guaranteed formula—and practise the length and swing together before relying on the delivery in a match.
What to aim for
A yorker is a full delivery intended to pitch around the batter’s toes or at the base of the stumps. For a right-handed batter, choose a visible target near the feet or stumps, then allow for the inward movement you can actually control. James Pattinson’s Australian Cricket Institute guide distinguishes yorkers aimed at the feet, at the stumps, and wide of off stump; it does not establish one target as best for every bowler.
An inward-moving ball aimed too far toward the batter’s body or leg side may miss the intended line. That is a practical risk to watch for, not a measured outcome from the guide. Pattinson advises erring on the full side when you miss: in his view, a low full toss is harder to hit than a half-volley.
Set up the inswing
Grip and seam
An archived ESPNcricinfo coaching page offers a starting cue for an inswing grip: keep the seam upright and angle it toward fine leg, with the shiny side of the ball to the left. It also mentions leaving a slight gap between the fingers as an option. The page does not specify the bowler’s handedness, so do not treat its left-right orientation as a universal instruction; check how the ball moves from your own hand and adjust accordingly.

- High quality all nylon made durable net for practice and training.
- Only net cage included without wooden poles. Size 100 ft{30.3m} * 10 ft {3.03m}.
- Increases the level of safety during batting and bowling training sessions.
Crease position and starting line
The same coaching page suggests that a slightly leftward front-foot landing may let the bowling arm finish between the legs, and that bowling from wider on the crease may make inswing easier—but also more obvious to the batter. It gives a starting line about half a foot outside off stump, with the ball curving in toward the batter or stumps. Use that as a trial point, not a fixed measurement: the archive does not calibrate it for different bowlers, pitches, or conditions.
Keep the release and follow-through on target
In a BCCI interview, Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav described advice from Wasim Akram to focus on the intended pitching spot, stay aware of his whole-body position, let the bowling arm follow the ball, and complete the follow-through along the target. Yadav also linked release alignment and wrist position with swing and line. He cautioned that poor alignment at release can send an attempted swinger down leg or too wide outside off. These are Yadav’s reported cues, not a guarantee or an individualized assessment of your action.

- ULTIMATE CAGE - The best cricket net system for the backyard, use to safely practice your pitching and batting swing.
- FOR BOWLING AND BATTING - One piece net to give the netting the best stability and strength. Open on one end to allow a full run-up and a better delivered ball.
- HEAVY DUTY NETTING - The netting is 0.08in with a 1.9in green mesh thick ensuring that the cricket ball is caught in the net with every hit.
- STRONG POLES - The black support poles are made from 1.6in steel with an 8inch ground spike to keep the net tight and taut, they split in to 4 pieces for easy storage.
- KEEP IT STABLE - The guy cords are PVC coated steel for the best support to the poles possible.
Keep the intended landing point in mind throughout the delivery. If you are working on accuracy, change one cue at a time—target line, seam presentation, or release alignment—so you can see which adjustment changes the result.
Practise the yorker and inward movement together
Set up a target drill
- Use a suitable net or practice area, and keep people clear of the ball’s path.
- Place an ordinary cone, flat marker, or shoe as a clear target near the feet or base of the stumps. Markers are optional; the target just needs to be visible.
- Before each ball, state your target and bowl a block of deliveries at it. Pattinson’s drill also uses markers wide of off stump for right- and left-handed batters; for this delivery, make the central target your feet-or-stumps area.
- Record how often the ball hits or comes close to the target. Track misses as well as successful deliveries.
Read the miss
- Too short: the ball may become a half-volley.
- Too full: the ball may become a low full toss.
- Too much inward movement: the ball may drift toward the pads or leg side.
- Too little inward movement: the final line may depend more heavily on your starting aim.
These are practical deductions from the target and alignment cues, not measured miss rates. Repeat a block after each single adjustment rather than changing several parts of your action at once.

Choose a target you can control
Feet, stumps, and wide-of-off targets are different options, not interchangeable versions of the same ball. Use the comparison below to decide what to work on; the available coaching material does not establish a universally best choice.
| Target | What to assess | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Feet | Whether you can land the yorker near the toes while controlling inward movement. | An inward miss can take the ball toward the pads or leg side. |
| Stumps | Whether your line and length reach the base of the wicket. | Too little movement may leave the ball dependent on its starting aim. |
| Wide of off | Whether you can keep the ball outside off rather than letting it swing back too far. | The cited drills include wide-of-off targets, but the sources do not establish this as the best inswinging-yorker target for a right-handed batter. |
What not to copy from other swing instructions
Stuart Broad’s ECB feature, published 8 March 2024, explains wobble seam and away swing rather than an inswinging yorker. For an away-swinger to a right-handed batter, Broad describes tilting the seam toward first or second slip and placing the fingers directly behind the ball. Those are comparison cues for a different delivery; do not substitute them for the inswing setup above.

There is no named, relevant statistic in the cited material that measures the success of this technique. The sources offer coaching cues, a player interview, and a practical drill—not controlled evidence that a particular grip makes a bowler faster or more accurate. They also do not establish an ideal pace, run-up, exact wrist angle, or universal seam angle. Umesh Yadav put the mental cue simply: “The key to getting it right is to go with a clear plan, only focus on bowling the yorker and be very confident about it.”
