The game documents separate Look, Target, and Scope sensitivity controls, plus aim acceleration, stick dead zones, and four aim-assist options—but it does not publish recommended numbers. Start from the game’s defaults, change one control at a time, and keep the setup that helps you track and switch targets consistently.
Which controller settings should you adjust first?
Use the control scheme you already understand, then treat the game’s default values as your baseline. The Coalition documents five schemes: Default, Modern, Modern Alt, Legacy, and Legacy Alt. Modern is designed to feel more like other current shooters; Legacy is closest to classic Gears. Familiarity is a better starting point than switching layouts in pursuit of an unverified accuracy advantage. Xbox Support’s E-Day controls guide lists the schemes and available settings.
Make changes in a repeatable practice situation, and adjust only one sensitivity category at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped. The procedure below is a practical way to use the documented controls, not a tested E-Day preset.
- Settle on a control scheme. Use Modern if its layout feels familiar from other shooters, or Legacy if classic Gears controls are more natural to you. Remapping and alternate schemes are also available.
- Adjust Look Sensitivity. Use the horizontal and vertical Look controls to tune how quickly the camera moves when you are not aiming.
- Adjust Target Sensitivity. Tune the separate horizontal and vertical Target controls while aiming. Practice tracking a moving opponent and transitioning between targets.
- Adjust Scope Sensitivity separately. If scoped aim feels too fast or slow, change the horizontal and vertical Scope controls rather than undoing a Target setting that works for unscoped aiming.
- Check stick response. If the camera moves when you are not touching the right stick, gradually raise its inner dead zone. A larger inner dead zone requires more stick movement before camera movement begins.
- Recheck in the situations you play. Test the result with your usual weapons and in the modes you care about. Keep a change only if it makes aiming more consistent for you.
What do Look, Target, and Scope sensitivity control?

Each category has separate horizontal and vertical controls. If turning left and right feels right but looking up and down does not, adjust the relevant axis rather than changing both. The official guide documents these controls but does not specify optimal values.

How are aim acceleration and dead zones different from sensitivity?
Aim acceleration is a separate controller option that changes the strength of stick aim acceleration. Sensitivity sets how responsive aiming feels; acceleration changes how stick response builds. If your aim feels unpredictable as you push the stick farther, review acceleration separately instead of treating it as another sensitivity slider.
Dead zones define the range of stick movement at the inner and outer ends of its travel. E-Day provides inner and outer dead-zone controls for both the left and right sticks. For camera drift, adjust the right-stick inner dead zone gradually; increasing it means the stick must move farther from its resting position before the camera responds. The official documentation does not prescribe numeric dead-zone values.

Which aim-assist option should you choose?
E-Day documents four choices. They do different things, so aim assist should not be treated as a sensitivity multiplier or as one generic feature.

The target-lock audio cue requires Lock-on Aim. Choose based on your preference, accessibility needs, and play context. The official descriptions explain the options; they do not establish which is strongest or fairest for competitive play.

Why might familiar Gears settings feel different in E-Day?
The Coalition describes E-Day as “a brand new game, built from scratch to feel like Gears but play like new.” Its July 31, 2026 gameplay update says projectiles have simulated travel time, so players may need to lead targets outside a weapon’s range. It also describes shoulder-swapping while aiming, scope sway, and recoil changes on some automatic weapons that reward short bursts.
Those are official design descriptions, not independent tests of the best settings. They do help explain why a setup from an earlier Gears game may not transfer cleanly: aiming involves weapon behavior as well as stick response. The update also describes rebuilt cover, a new slide, jump and climb actions, and changes to cover commitment and movement momentum. Comfort can therefore vary by weapon, mode, and how you move through a fight.

What settings are available for comfort and accessibility?
The controls guide also lists Toggle Aim, Toggle Sprint, vibration, stick swap, X/Y inversion, button remapping, Single Stick Control, and Swap Sticks While Aiming. These are preference and accessibility options, not required accuracy upgrades. Set them according to what feels usable for you.
Are these settings current for the full release?
At the time reflected by the official launch information, Early Access began October 1, 2026, and Xbox lists October 6, 2026 as the global release date. The Coalition’s update and Xbox’s E-Day page provide the dated game information. Check the in-game controls and current patch notes after updates, since settings and behavior can change.

Xbox lists a Gears of War: E-Day Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller, but the documented settings can be adjusted with an existing controller; the product listing is not evidence of an accuracy benefit. Numerical recommendations for Versus, Horde Siege, or Campaign are not established by the cited official material, so treat any exact values you encounter as player-specific unless they are backed by current, reproducible testing.
