In standard category leagues, that means considering wins, goals-against average (GAA), save percentage (SV%), and shutouts together—not picking on projected wins alone.
Start with your league’s goalie scoring
There is no single best goalie ranking for every fantasy league. NHL.com identifies wins, GAA, SV%, and shutouts as standard goalie categories, but points leagues can reward or penalize individual events differently. Check your league’s settings before comparing players.
Category leagues
In a standard category format, compare how a goalie could contribute across all four categories. A strong win outlook may help in wins, but it does not by itself establish value in GAA, SV%, or shutouts. NHL.com’s October 1, 2026 2026–27 goalie rankings use these standard categories as part of their evaluation.
Points leagues
Read the exact point values for wins, saves, goals against, and shutouts in your league. Yahoo Help’s default head-to-head points values, reported as of 2026, are 5 points for a win, -3 for goals against, 0.6 per save, and 5 for a shutout. Those are Yahoo defaults, not universal settings; your league may use different values.

Estimate workload and role security
A goalie can produce useful fantasy numbers only when he plays. Compare expected starts and the stability of his role: a likely starter generally has more opportunities to accumulate counting stats than a goalie in an uncertain tandem. NHL.com lists anticipated start volume and team goalie situations among its 2026–27 evaluation factors.
Check the latest team and lineup information close to draft or lineup decisions. A ranking can become outdated when a tandem changes or a goalie’s expected workload shifts.

Account for team context without overvaluing wins
Goal support can improve a goalie’s opportunity to earn wins, so team scoring outlook is relevant. But a win projection is only one part of fantasy value. NHL.com’s 2025–26 win-projection article notes that its projected-win order differs from rankings that also account for GAA, SV%, and shutouts. Its projections were described as estimates, not ceilings or floors, and could be affected by injuries. Use that prior-season article for context on projection limits, not as a current player forecast: NHL.com’s 2025–26 goalie win projections.
Compare performance in the categories your league rewards
Past production can help you assess a candidate, but interpret each statistic in the context of your scoring and projected workload. Yahoo Help defines SV% as (shots faced minus goals allowed) divided by shots faced, and GAA as (goals allowed × 60) divided by minutes played. Yahoo also states that a goalie must play the entire game to earn a shutout. See its goalie-stat definitions.

For category leagues, review wins alongside GAA, SV%, and shutouts. For points leagues, apply your league’s actual scoring weights instead of assuming that a category ranking translates directly to points value.
Check health, age, and projection uncertainty
Injury history or current concern can affect both availability and expected wins. NHL.com’s 2026–27 evaluation factors also include past regular-season and playoff production, age, contract status, upside, regression risk, and sleeper, bounce-back, or breakout potential. These are factors the publisher says it considers; the article does not assign a published numerical weight to each one.

Use projections as estimates, not guarantees. Recheck injury status and role information near the time you draft or set your lineup, especially when the ranking or projection was published earlier.

NHL.com’s October 1, 2026 ranking places Andrei Vasilevskiy, Logan Thompson, Ilya Sorokin, Jake Oettinger, and Igor Shesterkin in its top five for 2026–27. That is a time-stamped editorial ranking, not a universal answer: your league’s scoring, the goalie’s role, and current health can change how useful any ranking is to your roster.

- Read your settings: identify whether your league uses categories or points, then note the goalie categories or scoring weights.
