The key distinction: this port targets the 1997 N64 game’s reconstructed source code. It is not the separate PC project based on the unreleased Xbox 360 remaster.
Which GoldenEye PC version is this?
“GoldenEye on PC” can refer to different projects. The GoldenEye 007 PC Port project README describes its release as “the original N64 game running from reconstructed source, not the Xbox 360 remaster.” Other PC efforts use machine translations of the shipped binary for the unreleased Xbox 360 XBLA remaster, which is a different game and codebase.

This port compiles reconstructed C source for PC and replaces services that originally depended on N64 hardware. Its documented graphics path emulates the N64 Reality Signal Processor in software and sends rendering to OpenGL; video, audio, input, timers and save storage are handled by the PC port layer. That makes it a native host build of reconstructed game source—not the original N64 binary running in an emulator. The project outlines this approach on its internals page.
What changes on PC?
In its v0.4.0 release, dated 2026-09-28, the project lists Windows and Linux support, along with a Linux bundle that can be sideloaded on Steam Deck. Its listed display, control and performance differences are:

The N64 game’s display and controls were built for the console and its controller. The PC options therefore change how the game is presented and played, rather than identifying it as a port of the Xbox 360 remaster.
How does the PC frame rate compare with N64?
The PC project reports 60 fps for the campaign. The GoldenEye Depot lists 29.97 fps for the NTSC N64 versions and 25 fps for PAL. It notes that PAL can feel more stable because the lower rate gives the N64 more time for calculations per frame. These figures describe different releases and platforms; they do not establish an exhaustive comparison of timing behavior or visual effects between the PC port and every N64 level.
Which N64 version does the PC port support?
The original game had NTSC-U, NTSC-J and PAL releases. The port’s v0.4.0 release supports the US NTSC-U version. It recognizes PAL and Japanese ROMs by region, but those versions are not supported in that release.
Regional N64 editions also differ in text. The GoldenEye Depot records US and British spelling changes and some reworded mission briefings. Those are differences among the original regional releases, not additions made by the PC port. See The GoldenEye Depot’s versions reference for its regional-version details.

You need a legally owned, compatible .z64 ROM. The PC port release does not distribute the ROM or extracted game assets. The project is pre-1.0: its README warns that features may still be missing and breaking changes may occur between releases, so setup instructions and behavior can change as development continues.
