Souls-lite does not simply mean an easier Soulslike. Both terms describe games that draw on ideas associated with Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, but neither has a formal, agreed definition. “Soulslike” usually signals a recognizable design lineage; “Souls-lite” often signals that a game borrows selected elements while changing its structure, framing, accessibility, or other design choices.
What does “Soulslike” mean?
“Soulslike” is an informal genre label for games that take recognizable inspiration from FromSoftware’s Souls games. Commonly cited traits include deliberate combat, challenging encounters, exploration, character improvement, and learning through repeated failure. No single trait is a universal requirement, and there is no official checklist that makes a game pass or fail as a Soulslike.
The label points to a lineage rather than one fixed formula. Demon’s Souls is a central reference point for the term, while Dark Souls made the design influence especially familiar to players. A Steam editorial comparison relates “Souls-like” to Demon’s Souls in the way “roguelike” relates to Rogue: a later label identifying a family resemblance, not necessarily a claim that every descendant works the same way. Steam’s Souls-like genre page reflects that usage.
What does “Souls-lite” mean?
“Souls-lite” is a looser descriptor for games that use some Soulslike conventions but depart from the familiar framing or combine those conventions with other structures and influences. It can signal a selective blend, not a cleanly separate genre. The term does not establish that the game is easy, nor does it tell you which elements have been changed.

Why difficulty alone is not enough
Some developers use “Souls-lite” in an accessibility-related sense. The developers of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, for example, used the label while describing an action RPG intended to reach a broader range of players. That is evidence of one use of the term, not a universal definition. AUTOMATON’s 2024 interview with the Flintlock developers provides that example.
A genre blend can also prompt the label
Dead Cells has been discussed as Souls-lite because it blends influences and differs in framing from a more conventional Soulslike. That example shows how the label is applied; it is not a definitive classification of the game. GamesRadar’s feature on Soulslikes discusses the usage and the example.

How to tell whether a game fits either label
Because the terms have no canonical boundary, judge a game by the features that matter to you instead of relying on its genre tag. These questions are useful comparisons, not a formal test:
- Combat: Is combat deliberate, asking you to read enemies and choose openings, or does the game use a substantially different action style?
- Death and progress: Does failure create a recurring learning loop? What happens to resources, checkpoints, or other progress after death?
- Exploration and structure: Does the game reward learning an interconnected or intricate world, or is it built around another structure?
- Other influences: Is the Souls lineage the game’s dominant organizing idea, or one ingredient among influences from other genres?
- Framing and accessibility: Does the presentation preserve a punishing feel, or adapt the experience for a different audience or pace?
A game may share the combat and death loop associated with Soulslikes while changing its progression or overall structure. Another may borrow only a handful of familiar elements. The label is a starting clue; the answers to these questions explain what playing the game is likely to involve.

Why the labels remain contested
“Soulslike” is widespread game-industry jargon, but developers do not agree on whether it is precise or helpful. Fabio Pagetti, game and creative director at Reply Game Studios, described it as increasingly widespread terminology in an Unreal Engine interview. A familiar label can quickly communicate a design lineage, but it cannot reliably predict every mechanic or the balance between influences.
Hidetaka Miyazaki has also qualified the idea that FromSoftware invented the underlying design idea. In a 2025 GamesRadar report, he said: “I know we’ve been credited [with inventing the term ‘Soulslike’], but in terms of the game design, this idea of having death and learning as part of the core game cycle is something that the gaming audience was perhaps ready for.” His comment distinguishes credit for a label from the broader design idea; it is not a formal genre definition.

- Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
- Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
- Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts
Some developers see a downside to the shorthand. Caelan Pollock, creative director at Aggro Crab, criticized the way the label can encourage imitation. In a 2025 GamesRadar report, he said: “I think calling games ‘Soulslikes’ has kept a lot of devs stuck in a loop of recreating Dark Souls. And in my opinion, the best Dark Souls game has been made already, and it’s called Dark Souls.” That criticism concerns the label’s influence on design, not whether players find it useful shorthand.

| Term | Typical implication | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Soulslike | A game draws recognizably on conventions associated with Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. | A particular combat system, difficulty level, death penalty, or world structure. |
| Souls-lite | A game borrows selected Soulslike elements while changing or blending parts of the experience. | That it is easy, or that it follows a shared, official definition. |
The distinction is useful as a hint about a game’s inspirations, but not as a verdict on its mechanics. To understand a specific game, look at how it handles combat, death, exploration, progression, and its other influences.
