For flexible tactical infiltration, start with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Choose Hitman: World of Assassination for disguises and replayable mission puzzles, or Splinter Cell: Blacklist if you specifically want Sam Fisher. The best match depends on whether you want stealth to be mandatory, one option among several, or part of a shooter.
Match the game to the kind of stealth you want
“Stealth game” can mean very different play patterns: sneaking through darkness, infiltrating a flexible mission area, blending into a crowd, or using stealth to set up a tactical shot. The descriptions below point to different preferences rather than one objectively best game. (Sources: GameSpot; PCGamesN.)
| What you want | Start with | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible tactical infiltration | Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Approach outposts from different angles and use a broad set of tools; missions are more open-ended than a tightly linear spy thriller. |
| Disguises and replayable plans | Hitman: World of Assassination | Distinct levels reward experimenting with disguises, weapons, entry points, and other mission modifiers. This is social stealth, not mainly hiding in darkness. |
| Sam Fisher and selectable aggression | Splinter Cell: Blacklist | Its Ghost, Panther, and Assault approaches support different degrees of aggression; it is faster and more streamlined than earlier entries. |
| Stealth alongside tactical shooting | Sniper Elite 5 | Large maps, infiltration, sniping, and exfiltration suit players who want a shooter as well as stealth. |
| Linear espionage and survival | Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater | Its jungle stealth-survival setup combines camouflage with close-quarters combat. |
| Stealth as one immersive-sim approach | Deus Ex: Mankind Divided | Stealth and non-lethal equipment sit alongside lethal options and customizable loadouts. |
These distinctions reflect the descriptions in PlayStation’s stealth-game guide, GameSpot’s recommendations, and PCGamesN’s guide, updated December 29, 2025.
Which game is closest to Splinter Cell’s tactical infiltration?
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Choose The Phantom Pain if the appeal is planning an approach, adapting to a changing situation, and using tools to infiltrate an enemy position. Its outposts can be approached from different angles, giving missions a more player-directed feel than a linear spy thriller. GameSpot lists its release as September 1, 2015, for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC; that listing is not a check of current store stock or compatibility.

- Incredible real movement and control - you can even shift Sam's weight when preparing him for a split jump between two walls
- Exciting new moves maximize Sam's lethal fighting skills -- spin out of the shadows and kill silently
- All-new moves and levels - fight in jungles, on rooftops, on top of(and under) a moving train
- Advanced AI makes it harder than ever to get past enemies - if you reveal yourself they'll get reinforcements and put on armor
- Weapons now have secondary functions that can be equipped on the fly - be amazed at the advantage you get from the red dot of the laser sight
The trade-off is mission structure: this is the strongest fit in the group for open-ended infiltration, not necessarily for a tightly scripted Sam Fisher-style spy story. (Sources: GameSpot; PCGamesN.)
When are disguises and social stealth a better fit?
Hitman: World of Assassination
Pick Hitman: World of Assassination when you want to solve a level by studying routines, using disguises, and trying different plans. GameSpot describes it as containing three games’ worth of content, with distinct levels and modifiers such as weapon choice and entry points. The central pleasure is experimenting with how to reach an objective; it is a different kind of stealth from staying unseen in shadow.

Which Splinter Cell should you choose if you want Sam Fisher?
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Blacklist is the direct in-series choice in these recommendations. Its three approaches—Ghost, Panther, and Assault—let you prioritize avoiding notice, taking enemies down, or confronting them more directly. GameSpot characterizes it as faster and more streamlined than earlier Splinter Cell games, so it is a useful reference point if you want the series but prefer a brisker pace.

Sniper Elite 5
Choose Sniper Elite 5 if careful infiltration and tactical shooting belong in the same experience. Its large maps, sniping, and exfiltration make it a better fit for someone who wants a shooter alongside stealth than for someone seeking spy-focused stealth alone. GameSpot lists a May 26, 2022 release across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, and iOS; this is the guide’s platform listing, not confirmation of current availability.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
For a more linear espionage story with survival mechanics, PlayStation describes Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater as a jungle stealth-survival game built around camouflage and close-quarters combat. GameSpot lists its release as August 28, 2025, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Treat that as the article’s release and platform listing, not a live store check.

How to make the final choice
Before picking a title, decide which of these differences matters most to you:
Quick Recap
- How much stealth you want: Is staying undetected the core challenge, or do you want the option to fight or use another approach?
- Mission structure: Do you prefer a linear story, open-ended infiltration, or levels designed for replay and experimentation?
- What happens after detection: Consider whether you want to recover through escape or combat, or would rather avoid detection as the main constraint. The guides describe different play styles but do not establish a single detection-recovery rule across these games.
- Setting and tone: Choose between spy fiction, social assassination, military infiltration, and jungle survival.
- Combat and non-lethal options: Decide whether you want stealth paired with tactical shooting, selectable aggression, or non-lethal equipment.
- Your platform: Recommendation-guide platform lists are not guarantees of current store stock, backward compatibility, or a particular edition. Check the live store listing for your platform before buying.
