Structured, gradually progressed strength-training programmes can reduce sports-injury risk, including in evidence that records some overuse injuries. But research does not show that lifting universally beats rest for every overuse injury, or tell someone with a current injury how long to stop training. Prevention is best understood as appropriate strengthening combined with recovery and sensible management of training load.
What studies say about strength training and injury prevention
The most directly relevant synthesis is a 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis by Lauersen, Andersen and Andersen. It included six randomized trials published from 2003 to 2016, with 7,738 participants aged 12–40 and 177 acute or overuse injuries recorded. Across the trials, strength-training programmes were associated with lower sports-injury risk: RR 0.338 (95% CI 0.238–0.480). The authors rated the evidence high certainty and reported a dose-response association between training volume and prevention.
That result is encouraging, but it is a pooled estimate for sports injuries—not a promise that strength training cuts every individual’s risk by the same amount, nor an overuse-only estimate. The trials varied in participants, programmes, outcomes and follow-up. The review recommends familiarisation and sound technique, followed by gradual increases in training volume and intensity; it does not mean that more training is always better. Read the 2018 review.
How to read the evidence without mixing outcomes
Reviews sometimes report different injury categories or combine multiple kinds of exercise. Their estimates answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Evidence | What it measured | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lauersen et al., 2014 | Overuse injuries in physical-activity programmes overall | RR 0.527 (95% CI 0.373–0.746) | An estimate for physical-activity programmes overall, not strength training alone. |
| Lauersen et al., 2014 | Sports injuries in a separate strength-training analysis | RR 0.315 (95% CI 0.207–0.480) | A strength-training estimate for sports injuries, not an overuse-only result. |
| Football review, 2021 | Non-contact musculoskeletal injuries in football; 10 trials and 13,355 athletes | IRR 0.77 (95% CI 0.61–0.97) | Exercise-based programmes in football, not strength training in isolation; evidence was rated very low quality. |
| Contact-sports review, 2025 | Total injuries in contact-sport strength-training prevention programmes | RR 0.70 (95% CI 0.60–0.82) | Recent supporting evidence for total injuries; it does not answer every overuse-specific question. |
The estimates come from reviews of different populations, interventions and endpoints. A relative risk or incidence rate ratio below 1 indicates fewer injuries in the intervention group relative to the comparison group in that analysis; it does not provide an individual forecast. The 2014 review, the 2021 football review and the 2025 contact-sports review provide the underlying context.
Why rest still matters
Rest is part of training-load management, not simply the alternative to strengthening. The International Olympic Committee consensus on load and injury risk calls for adequate recovery, particularly after intensive training, competition and travel. It also recommends monitoring pain and functional limitations. A prevention programme that adds work without allowing recovery can undermine its purpose.

- MULTIPLE WEIGHT COMBINATIONS: Customize your training intensity with adjustable weights options. Each individual dumbbell can be adjusted to 6/8/10/13/15/17/22.5lbs, barbell: 7.5-45.8 lbs, and kettlebell: 3.8-23lbs. - PREMIUM WEIGHT PLATES: Filled with high-density iron sand and wrapped in durable PE material. Helps protect floors, resists daily wear, minimizes rattling, and provides a stable lifting experience. Dual-sided LB/KG markings allow quick weight identification during workouts
There is no single weekly percentage or load ratio that works as a universal safety rule. Training demands and recovery needs differ, so use changes in workload alongside symptoms and function rather than relying on one number. See the IOC consensus statement.
How to approach prevention in practice
- Build familiarity first. Learn the movements and establish technique before adding substantial volume or intensity.
- Progress gradually. Increase training demands over time rather than making abrupt jumps that can add to overuse risk.
- Make recovery part of the plan. Allow adequate recovery after hard training, competition and travel; consider pain and changes in function when deciding how to proceed.
- Adapt to the activity and person. The evidence comes from specific sports and programmes, so it does not establish one routine or dose for every sport, age or training history.
The 2018 review reported that nearly 4,000 participants completed interventions lasting several months without an adverse event attributed to strength training. That is evidence that the studied programmes were well tolerated—not proof that strength training is risk-free.

If you already have an overuse injury
Prevention trials do not establish the right rest duration or a treatment plan for an existing injury. If you have persistent pain, worsening symptoms or functional limitations, do not treat a general prevention result as an instruction to keep training through them—or to stop for a fixed number of days. A qualified sports physiotherapist or strength-and-conditioning professional can help assess the situation and guide a suitable return or progression.
