In NHL statistics, save percentage (SV%) is saves divided by shots faced. A save is credited when the goalie stops a shot on goal; if two goaltenders combine for a shutout, the NHL records a Club shutout rather than awarding either goalie an individual shutout.
What counts as a save in NHL hockey?
A save is recorded when a goaltender stops a shot on goal. The NHL defines a shot on goal as an attacking player’s shot, tip, or deflection that enters the net or would have entered had the goalie not stopped it. How to calculate save percentage (SV%)
SV% = saves ÷ shots faced. The NHL glossary states that save percentage is determined by dividing saves by shots faced. For example, if a goalie faces 30 shots on goal and makes 27 saves, the calculation is 27 ÷ 30 = 0.900, or .900 SV% (90%). NHL glossary

How SV% differs from goals-against average
Save percentage and goals-against average (GAA) describe different things. SV% is the proportion of shots faced that the goalie stopped. GAA measures goals allowed per 60 minutes of playing time. What goalie statistics can—and cannot—tell you
An NHL goalie line can include shots against, saves, SV%, GAA, time on ice, and shutouts. Each field answers a different question: SV% relates stopped shots to shots faced, GAA relates goals allowed to playing time, and shutouts record a shutout outcome, including the Club designation when two goalies combine for one. These figures do not, by themselves, describe the difficulty or circumstances of the chances faced. An NHL goalie-analysis article notes that common public measures offer only a limited view of goaltending. NHL statistics can also be queried across historical, single-season, multi-season, and game-by-game views, depending on when a statistic became official; the league described that broader historical interface in 2019.
