The system can be understood relatively quickly; building reliable reads with specific defensemen takes longer. NHL interviews have described that adjustment as potentially lasting up to half a season, an estimate rather than a universal timetable.
What a goalie has to learn
The defensive structure
A goalie first needs to understand how the team intends to defend: where pressure comes from, how players protect the middle, and what the structure asks them to do against rushes and sustained time in the defensive zone. Jim Corsi, a former NHL goalie coach, describes goaltending as a set of skills that must work in concert with team defense. A goalie changing clubs needs time to develop that synchronicity with new defensemen and the system around them (NHL.com Coaches Room, March 15, 2018).
Individual teammates’ habits
A system diagram does not tell a goalie exactly what a particular teammate will do in a live play. Linus Ullmark has described the distinction this way: “I would say that it’s more systems in-zone but off the rush it’s more tendencies.” A goalie learns whether a defenseman attacks early or holds a gap, relies on a stick or goes down to block, and how they handle a puck sent around the boards—controlling it to make a play or chipping it out. Those choices shape what the goalie expects next. NHL interviews suggest becoming fully comfortable with such tendencies can take up to half a season, but that is a reported estimate, not a controlled study or promise that every goalie needs that long (NHL.com, January 12, 2025).
How defensive style affects positioning and reads
Fit depends partly on the chances a team tends to allow. Rush attacks and odd-man situations demand different reads from sustained end-zone possessions, and goalies differ in their preferred depth, movement, and reliance on anticipation and rhythm. A goalie accustomed to challenging shooters may adjust depth if a new team defends rushes differently.

James Reimer described changing his approach after moving from Toronto to San Jose: “I played a touch deeper [in San Jose]. In Toronto, I challenged hard but the way they played odd-man rushes and stuff was different in San Jose, so you had to stay a little deeper.” It is an example of one goalie adapting to one team’s play, not a rule for all goalies or systems (NHL.com, February 23, 2018).
Why workload can change the adjustment
Fewer shots do not necessarily make a transition simpler. Some goalies rely on movement, rhythm, and regular action, so a lower-volume role can feel different even if the team appears to give up less. Infrequent chances may still be dangerous, and a goalie has to stay ready through quiet stretches. The effect depends on the individual goalie; a busy workload is not automatically better for everyone.

How teams can help a new goalie settle in
Goalie coaches can help translate a team’s defensive style into practical preparation. Video and chance data can identify situations to work on, such as lateral movement after an east-west pass, while allowing coaches and goalies to review how those situations actually appear on film.
A September 2026 Chicago Sun-Times report described the Blackhawks using team analytics to identify lateral movement and saves after east-west passes as training priorities, then checking the data against video before sharing it with goalies. That is a specific example of one club’s preparation, not evidence that every NHL team follows the same process or that these are universal priorities (Chicago Sun-Times, September 23, 2026).

Why a trade deadline move is especially difficult
A move early in the season or during the offseason generally gives a goalie more time to learn teammates and build shared reads before every game carries immediate stakes. A deadline acquisition may have far less runway: NHL reporting in 2025 described teams as having about 20 games remaining after the deadline, with a goalie unlikely to start more than 15 and limited practice time to adjust (NHL.com, 2025).
Ryan Miller reflected on the extra pressure of arriving at the deadline: “When I switched teams and had training camp there’s less pressure with that long season ahead, almost like you can make some mistakes here and there,” he said. “When it’s the deadline, it does feel like quite a bit. You want to play your own game, you want to fit in, you want to get hot at the right time and there’s tremendous pressure to perform. Having a little time to sort that out is ideal, but at the deadline you’re immediately playing important games.” That is Miller’s account of his experience, not a league-wide rule (NHL.com, February 23, 2017).

How to judge a goalie’s transition fairly
A few starts or a short run of results cannot establish that a new defensive system helped or hurt a goalie. For example, NHL.com reported that Joonas Korpisalo went 7-3-1 with a .921 save percentage after a 2023 trade, compared with 11-11-3 and a .913 save percentage before it. Those player-specific splits do not show that the trade or system caused the difference; team defense, schedule, role, health, and sample size can all matter (NHL.com, January 12, 2025).
When comparing two goalie-team situations, consider the factors together rather than treating any one as a prediction:

Prior experience changing teams may help a goalie know which questions to ask, but it does not eliminate the need to learn new reads. Available reporting and coaching analysis explain the adjustment process; they do not establish a population-level statistic or controlled causal estimate for how a system change affects goalie performance.
