How to Tell Whether an NFL Player Is Out, Doubtful, Questionable, or Active

Check the NFL injury report’s Game Status field: Out means the player will not play, Doubtful means the player is unlikely to play, and Questionable means it is uncertain whether the player will play. These are qualitative labels, not numerical odds. For a final game-day check, look for the team’s inactive announcement.

What each NFL game-status label means

The NFL defines the terms in its injury-report policy. In the league’s wording, “Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.” NFL policy revision

Game Status What it means
Out The player will not play in the game.
Doubtful The player is unlikely to participate; it does not mean the player is definitively out.
Questionable It is uncertain whether the player will play. The term does not promise availability or state a percentage chance.
Blank or not listed Not a separate injury designation. The NFL policy says players who are certain to play are not listed in the Game Status Report, even if they appeared on the practice report. Check for updates and the game-day inactives.

Probable is not a current game-status label: the NFL removed it in its 2016 policy revision. The league said approximately 95 percent of players marked Probable in prior years did play; that historical figure explained the policy change and is not a forecast for an individual player now marked Questionable or Doubtful. Practice participation is not the same as game status

The official report has separate fields for practice participation and Game Status. Practice entries describe whether and how much a player practiced; the game-status designation addresses expected participation in the game. For example, the official NFL Week 4, 2026 injury report shows the fields separately, including practice entries with blank game-status fields.

A player missing practice does not, by itself, establish the final game decision. Read the Game Status field for the listed designation, and check for a later report or the inactive announcement before kickoff.

How to check whether a player is playing this week

  1. Open the NFL’s official injury report for the correct week, and confirm the player’s team and opponent.
  2. Read the Game Status column separately from the practice-participation entries.
  3. Interpret the designation literally: Out means will not play; Doubtful means unlikely; Questionable means uncertain.
  4. Check the latest available report. The NFL’s 2026 schedule requires an update if a player’s condition changes after the initial report. NFL 2026–27 important dates
  5. Look for the game-day inactive announcement to confirm the player has not been deactivated for that game.

When NFL injury reports are filed

Filing days depend on the game day and the season’s schedule. For a Sunday game, the NFL’s 2026 schedule says teams file the weekly Game Status Report by Friday, by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. Other game days have different filing deadlines, so consult the current NFL schedule rather than applying Friday’s timing to every game.

What “active” means on game day

In a game-day context, active means the player is on the list available for that game; the inactive announcement is the key confirmation of who has been deactivated. But “active” can also refer to a player’s status on a team’s 53-player active/inactive roster, which is a different roster designation. The NFL explains that distinction in its training camp roster FAQs. Check which list a source means before treating “active” as confirmation of game participation.

Comparing two players’ chances of playing

Use the same evidence for each player rather than translating the labels into invented percentages:

  • Compare the exact Game Status designation on the latest report.
  • Check whether each player’s report has been updated since the initial filing.
  • Review practice participation as separate context, not a replacement for Game Status.
  • Once published, check the game-day inactive list.

The NFL’s labels are qualitative. A precise probability requires a separately sourced model or dataset; the designation alone does not provide one.
