If no team stands out, explore a few histories and identities, watch several games, and notice which one you naturally want to follow. There is no objectively correct choice, and you do not have to commit before you know what you enjoy.
Start with the connections you already have
A nearby team can make game days easier to share, while supporting the team followed by friends or family gives you an existing conversation to join. A city you care about can also be a meaningful reason to follow its club. These are practical ways to build a connection, not rules for choosing.
- Is there an NFL team in or near your hometown?
- Do friends or relatives already follow a team and watch together?
- Is there a city whose identity or history matters to you?
If one answer immediately points to a team, begin there. If several do—or none do—use the next checks to narrow your options.
Check whether you can watch the team
Before settling on a team far from home, check the NFL’s team schedules and where-to-watch guide. It personalizes the schedule view based on your location and the services available to you, which can help you understand what games are practical to follow. Coverage and provider availability can change, so check the current information for your own location; the guide is not a guarantee that one service carries every game.

Explore team histories and identities
If viewing access and personal ties do not decide it, look at the teams themselves. NFL.com’s fandom guides cover all 32 clubs by division, and NFL Support’s list of official team websites is a starting point for club-specific information. For franchise origins and moves, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s franchise histories provide background.
History can help you find a point of connection, but it does not tell you which team is best for you or predict how it will perform now. Try a short list of two or three teams that appeal for different reasons—a city, a name or identity, a family connection, or simple curiosity.

Watch before you commit
Follow a few games involving your shortlist. If two of your candidates play each other, that matchup can be a useful way to see whether you find yourself leaning toward one side. Pay attention to which games you want to keep watching and whose result you check afterward. This is a personal test, not something a guide or fan poll can decide for you.
You can also follow more than one team while you are figuring it out. The recurring NFL schedule gives you regular chances to compare teams: the league has 32 clubs in two conferences, each with four divisions of four teams. Every club plays 17 regular-season games over 18 weeks, including a bye week and six games against divisional rivals—two against each, one at home and one away. Teams also play every club in the other conference once every four years, so the rest of the matchups rotate. See the league’s schedule explainer for how the formula works.

Think beyond this season’s record
A winning team can be exciting to follow, and current success may be part of what draws you in. But a team’s fortunes change. If you want a connection that lasts beyond one season, consider whether you like the team, city, or community—not only its latest results. No schedule formula can predict which club will stay successful.
Make the choice when it feels natural
Once you have a team you enjoy watching and can realistically follow, you have a good answer. You do not need to settle on a lifelong allegiance on day one. A jersey or other team gear can wait until you are sure you want it; it is optional, not a prerequisite to being a fan.
