What Does It Mean When an MLB Player Is Sent to the Minors?

Being sent to the minors usually means an MLB player was optioned off the 26-man roster while remaining on the 40-man roster. Outrights and DFAs work differently.

Usually, it means the team has removed the player from its active 26-man roster and assigned him to a Minor League team. Most often, the move is an option: the player stays on the 40-man roster, and the team does not need to put him through waivers first. The phrase alone does not reveal the exact transaction—or mean the player has been released.

How MLB rosters fit together

The 26-man roster is the active Major League group. The larger 40-man roster includes those players and others, including some Minor Leaguers. A club generally needs a player on its 40-man roster to add him to the 26-man roster. MLB’s 40-man roster glossary explains the roster’s scope.

What “optioned to the minors” means

An option removes an eligible player from the 26-man roster but keeps him on the 40-man roster. MLB defines an option as allowing a player to be sent to the Minors “without first being subjected to waivers.” MLB’s Minor League Options glossary sets out the rules.

Options, option years and repeated moves

  • Players typically have three option years; some qualify for a fourth under MLB’s eligibility rule.
  • An option year is generally charged after at least 20 days in the Minors on an optional assignment. Multiple option moves in the same season normally count as one option year.
  • A club can option a player no more than five times in a season before a further assignment requires outright-assignment waivers.
  • A player with more than five years of Major League service must consent to being optioned. A player who is out of options must be designated for assignment and pass through outright waivers before he can be sent to the Minors.

How soon can the player return?

In ordinary cases, a position player must spend at least 10 days in the Minors after being optioned before recall; a pitcher must spend 15 days. Exceptions include serving as the 27th man for a doubleheader or replacing a player placed on the injured list. A 27th man returns to the Minors after the doubleheader and accrues one day of Major League service time. See MLB’s options glossary and 27th man glossary.

How an option differs from an outright or DFA

Transaction Roster effect Waivers and player rights
Optioned Removed from the 26-man roster; remains on the 40-man roster. No prior waiver process is needed if the player has an available option. Service-time consent rules and recall limits may apply.
Outrighted After clearing outright waivers, the player may be assigned to the Minors. A player with more than five years of Major League service can reject an outright assignment. A player with more than three years of service, or who has been outrighted before, may reject it in favor of free agency.
Designated for assignment (DFA) The player is immediately removed from the 40-man roster while the club resolves his status. The club has seven days to trade him or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers. If he clears outright waivers, he may be assigned to the Minors, subject to applicable player rights.

These are different formal paths, not interchangeable names for a demotion. MLB’s glossaries explain outright assignments and designations for assignment.

What the phrase does—and does not—tell you

“Sent to the minors” does not, by itself, establish whether the player was optioned, outrighted, or designated for assignment first. Nor does it prove that he was released, injured, or demoted for a particular performance reason. To understand a specific move, check the club’s transaction announcement and determine the player’s roster, options and service-time status.
