Check MLB’s official starting-lineups page near first pitch, then follow the matchup in MLB Gameday or the MLB app. If a player’s name is missing, that confirms only that they are not listed as a starter—not that they are unavailable for the whole game.
Check whether the player is starting
Open MLB’s starting-lineups page and find the matchup. Check both the lineup and the probable pitchers. MLB labels the information “Subject to change,” so an early listing is provisional; check again closer to game time.
If the player is absent, describe that narrowly: they are not in the announced starting lineup. Do not call them scratched or unavailable for the entire game unless the team or league confirms it. A player omitted from the starters may still appear later.
Follow the game as it unfolds
Open the game in MLB Gameday in a browser or use the MLB app. MLB describes Gameday as a free way to follow live scores, pitch-by-pitch Statcast data, highlights, box scores, and a detailed play feed.

- Use the live score and play feed to follow the action.
- Check the box score and later game events for evidence of whether the player enters the game.
These tools report game events; they do not diagnose an injury or explain a player’s availability. For an injury or status explanation, look for an explicit team or league update. Neither the lineup page nor the Gameday feature description promises that a status change will appear instantly.
If you want to watch rather than track
MLB.TV is a separate viewing option, not a requirement for checking a lineup or following the score. Verify its current plans, blackout restrictions, and availability where you live before subscribing; those terms are not established here.
