Yes, an anti-cheat hardware ban can expire in some games, but there is no universal duration. Activision says Call of Duty hardware bans vary in length and may later be cleared for online play. Riot defines its hardware bans as permanent prevention of play on a physical device. BattlEye’s stated permanent rule applies to global bans, a different enforcement category.
What does a hardware ban restrict?
A hardware ban targets a physical device rather than only the player’s account. An account ban or suspension restricts the account; a game-feature restriction can limit particular modes or services. A global ban is a provider-defined category. These labels describe different enforcement actions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Duration depends on the specific publisher and category. The official policies below do not establish a cross-provider average or a standard number of days.
How the published policies differ
| Publisher or service | Enforcement category | Duration stated | Status or appeal guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activision / Call of Duty | Device hardware ban | Varies; a device may later be cleared for online play. The policy gives no standard duration or public countdown. | Check device status in a crossplay Call of Duty title while signed in with an account in good standing. Hardware bans are not eligible for appeal. Activision policy |
| Riot Games | Hardware ban on a physical device | Defined as permanent prevention of play on that device. | Riot says penalties can be appealed if issued in error, but does not guarantee a successful appeal. Riot Community Pact |
| BattlEye | Global ban | Permanent; BattlEye says no exceptions will be made. This is not a general hardware-ban duration. | See BattlEye’s support guidance for its global-ban process. BattlEye Support |
| Electronic Arts | Account suspension or ban | EA says suspensions expire after a period; bans can last longer or be permanent. This is account-level guidance, not a hardware-ban rule. | Check account status and appeal guidance. EA account enforcement guidance |
Activision / Call of Duty: a hardware ban may be cleared
Activision’s policy says, “Hardware bans can vary in length.” It also explains that the ban applies to a device, may later be cleared for online gameplay, and can be imposed again after another violation. The policy does not publish a fixed number of days or a countdown that players can use to predict when access will return.

To check the device’s status, Activision directs players to use the device in a crossplay Call of Duty title while logged in to an account in good standing. Activision also states, “Hardware bans are not eligible for appeal.” Its separate rules about appealing permanent account bans should not be read as an appeal route for a hardware ban. Read Activision’s security and enforcement policy.
Riot Games: the hardware-ban category is permanent
Riot’s Community Pact describes “Hardware Bans” as “Permanent prevention of play (physical device).” That definition applies to Riot’s policy terminology; it does not establish the duration used by other publishers or anti-cheat providers.

Riot says penalties may be appealed if they were issued in error, but that general statement is not a promise that every hardware-ban appeal will succeed. For VALORANT, Riot separately says cheating with unauthorized hardware or software that gives an unfair advantage can result in a permanent account ban. That is an account penalty, not a stated hardware-ban timer. Riot Community Pact · VALORANT Banning FAQ.
BattlEye: its permanent statement covers global bans
BattlEye’s support page says, “Global bans are permanent and no exceptions will be made.” The statement is about BattlEye global bans. It does not define a universal hardware-ban duration or show that every device-level restriction from every game or provider is permanent. BattlEye Support.

Do suspension and account-ban rules tell you whether a hardware ban expires?
No. EA’s guidance distinguishes account suspensions, which expire after a period, from account bans that may last longer or be permanent. That distinction concerns access tied to an EA account; it is not evidence about EA hardware bans. Likewise, a permanent account ban in a particular game does not by itself tell you whether a separate device-level restriction has a timer.
When checking a notice or policy, identify exactly what is restricted—account, device, game feature, or provider-wide service—before drawing conclusions about duration or appeal rights.

What to do if you are trying to confirm a ban’s status
- Identify the publisher, game, and penalty wording. Use the publisher’s official enforcement notice or policy, and distinguish “hardware ban” from “account ban,” “suspension,” and “global ban.”
- Use the stated status route. For Call of Duty hardware bans, Activision says to check the device in a crossplay title while signed in with an account in good standing.
- Check the appeal rules for that penalty. Activision says hardware bans are not appealable. Other publishers have their own procedures; Bungie, for example, provides a form for ban or restriction appeals, but the applicable rules depend on the game and penalty. Bungie ban and restriction guidance.
- Do not infer a return date without an official duration. Where a policy says only that duration varies—or provides no device-ban duration—community estimates are not a confirmed expiration date.
