What to Know Before Buying a Game in Steam Early Access

Steam Early Access is a purchase of a work in progress. Assess the build you can play now, the developer’s plan and communication, and whether the current value justifies the risk.

Buy an Early Access game only if its current playable version is worth the price to you. Steam Early Access means the game is available while it is still being developed; future features, a planned finish date, and the developer’s eventual ability to complete it are not guaranteed.

Judge the game that exists now

Steam’s advice is direct: “You should consider what the game is like to play right now.” Look at current screenshots and trailers, then read the game’s listing and recent player information. Ask whether the present build—not a promised future version—sounds enjoyable enough to justify its price.

If the current state does not appeal to you, Steam suggests waiting for an update or full release. That is often the safer choice if the game is missing features you consider essential or if you do not want to deal with bugs and change during development.

Read the developer’s Early Access plan

Developers complete an Early Access questionnaire before release. Its answers appear in the blue Early Access section below the screenshots on the store page. Read what the developer says about the game’s current state, intended development, and the kind of player participation it wants.

  • This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
  • Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

Compare those statements with the game’s update events. A plan is more useful to a buyer when it is specific enough to assess against what has actually changed and what the developer has communicated. Steam does not turn those answers or updates into a guarantee of delivery.

Check for a long gap in updates

Steam says it adds a notice above the Developer Questionnaire when more than 12 months have passed without the game being updated and the developer posting an “update” type event to tell players about it. Treat that notice as a prompt to investigate the game’s recent history, not as an explanation of the delay or a prediction of what happens next. A gap alone does not establish why development slowed.

Account for the risk that development may not finish

The developer—not Steam—decides when the game is ready to leave Early Access. Steam cautions that some developers may be unable to “finish” their game. A target date or estimated development period is therefore a developer plan, not a platform-backed release promise. Buy only if the current version offers enough value even if development takes longer than expected or does not reach the intended finish.

Know how Steam refunds apply

Steam’s general refund policy says most games and software may be refunded within 14 days of purchase if they have been played for less than two hours. For Early Access games, time spent playing still counts toward that two-hour limit; Early Access does not pause or reset it. Requests go through Steam Support. Steam says you can still ask for a refund outside the usual criteria, but that is not a guaranteed refund. Its policy page was last updated April 23, 2024, so check the live policy before relying on its terms: Steam Refunds.

Understand what happens when the game leaves Early Access

Buying an Early Access game gives you access to its current form as it evolves. Steam says you keep access when it moves out of Early Access; its buyer FAQ does not say you must buy it again for that transition. Continued access does not, by itself, guarantee that the finished game will match the original plan.

Do not confuse Early Access with Advance Access

Early Access is a development model: the game is sold while unfinished. Advance Access is an option on some pre-purchase editions that lets buyers play before the game’s official release; it does not, by itself, mean the title is in ongoing Early Access development. Whether Advance Access is offered is up to the developer or publisher. See Steam’s Advance Access FAQ for the distinction.

Compare Early Access listings on the factors that matter

When choosing between games, compare their current playable state and how well that build matches your interests, then weigh the developer’s stated plan and recent communication against the price and your tolerance for unfinished work.

  • Current value: Would you enjoy the game as it is, with the features and content currently available?
  • Plan and communication: Are the development goals understandable, and do recent updates or event posts give you useful evidence of progress?
  • Price: Is the current build worth what you would pay even if the roadmap changes or development stops?
  • Risk tolerance: Are you comfortable with bugs, missing features, evolving plans, and the possibility that the game may not be completed?

These are practical comparison questions, not a Steam rating system. Requirements, controls, prices, reviews, and update histories are specific to each game, so check the individual listing rather than assuming one Early Access title is representative of another. Steam’s Early Access buyer FAQ explains the platform’s guidance, update notice, and continued-access details.
