For wireless PC VR streamed from a computer in your home, there is no established universal minimum broadband speed. The key connection is the local one between your gaming PC, router and headset. Start with the streaming app’s requirements, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet if possible, and give the headset a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal—or 6 GHz if every part of your setup supports it.
Does broadband speed affect wireless PC VR?
Your internet plan’s download speed is not the same as the speed or quality of the local connection carrying video from your PC to your headset. A speed test can tell you about your internet connection, but it does not measure the PC-to-headset Wi-Fi path. For in-home streaming, local signal quality, interference and how the PC connects to the router matter more directly.
Internet access may still be needed for downloading games, online play and other services. But the official requirements cited here do not set a numeric broadband-speed target for streaming PC VR locally. Valve describes broadband as recommended in its Steam Link setup announcement, not as a universal minimum for the in-home stream.
What network do the major streaming options require?
| Streaming option | Published network guidance | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Link for Meta, HTC and PICO headsets | Minimum: a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5. Recommended: Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. | Valve’s Steam Link requirements apply to the Steam Link app streaming from a PC running Steam and SteamVR to supported headsets. |
| Steam Link setup | Connect the PC to the router by wire and connect the headset over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Valve labels broadband and Wi-Fi 6/6E as recommendations, not requirements. | Valve’s setup announcement; recommendations are not universal requirements for every app. |
| Virtual Desktop | The computer should be wired to a 5 GHz AC or AX Wi-Fi router. | Virtual Desktop’s official site describes its own PC VR streaming setup. |
| Microsoft Mixed Reality Link for Quest 3 | Microsoft calls for a gigabit router/switch and PC LAN support. If both devices use Wi-Fi, use the same SSID, keep signal strength at least 75%, and use 5 GHz or 6 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz. | These details are specific to Mixed Reality Link, not a general PC VR rule. |
These requirements vary by app and headset. A router with 6 GHz capability cannot give 6 GHz connectivity to a headset that does not support that band, so check both ends of the connection before buying equipment.

How to set up the home network
- Wire the gaming PC to the router. Use Ethernet if feasible. Valve specifies a wired PC-to-router connection for Steam Link. It also keeps the PC’s stream from having to share wireless airtime with the headset.
- Connect the headset to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Use 6 GHz instead only when the headset, router and streaming software support it. Valve advises choosing 5 GHz over the more congested 2.4 GHz band in its Suggested Network Settings.
- Place the router or access point near the play area. Reduce walls, floors and other obstructions between it and the headset where practical. Steam notes that distance, walls, floors, metal, electronic equipment and nearby wireless networks can affect signal strength.
- Avoid making the PC and headset compete for Wi-Fi airtime. If both are wireless, their transmissions can interfere. Steam warns that when the PC sends data to the router while the router sends it to the headset—or the headset talks back—the result can be a choppy experience.
- Check the specific app and headset requirements. Confirm supported Wi-Fi bands and the app’s minimum and recommended setup rather than choosing equipment by its advertised internet download speed.
Why can VR stutter when an internet speed test is fast?
A fast broadband result only describes the internet connection measured by the test. It does not establish that the local wireless path from the PC through the router to the headset is strong or free of contention. Distance, obstructions, nearby wireless networks and competing transmissions can still disrupt the stream. Check the headset’s signal and the PC’s connection to the router; for Steam Link and Virtual Desktop, wired PC networking is part of the published setup guidance.

- Headset compatibility: whether the headset supports 5 GHz, 6 GHz, or both.
- App guidance: the streaming application’s stated minimum and recommendation.
- PC connection: whether the router has an Ethernet connection available for the gaming PC.
- Coverage where you play: whether the signal remains strong in the actual play area, accounting for walls and distance.
- Local congestion: nearby networks and devices that may share wireless airtime.
A Wi-Fi 6 router—or Wi-Fi 6E router when the headset and software support 6 GHz—may be a relevant upgrade, but replacing a router is optional if existing equipment meets the app’s requirements and performs adequately. An Ethernet cable may be all that is needed to wire a PC already near a suitable router.
