Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose the console that keeps your most important games playable, after checking each title’s generation and whether you own it digitally or on disc. Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, with documented exceptions. Neither system turns your purchases into licenses for the other platform.
Start with the games you actually want to keep playing
Make a short priority list before comparing console specs. For each game, note its platform and generation, whether your copy is digital or disc, and whether you care about add-ons, saved progress, cross-play, or a newer-generation version. Check the official compatibility list and, for any uncertain title, the publisher’s support page. Xbox’s older-generation support is selective, and Sony documents PS4 exceptions on PS5.
There is no reliable single percentage for how much of one person’s existing library will work on the other console. The useful answer is title by title: a large collection matters less than whether your must-play games are accessible.
Check compatibility and ownership separately
| What you own | What to verify | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox games | Check the Xbox backward-compatible games list; Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is selective. | Supported Xbox One games and selected older titles can be played on Series X|S. A supported digital game appears in Ready to Install; a supported disc game downloads but still requires the disc to play. Xbox backward-compatible games. |
| PS4 games | Check Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 exceptions and any notes about missing features or unexpected behavior. | The overwhelming majority of PS4 games work on PS5. Digital copies can be installed from your library; disc copies require a disc-drive PS5. Sony’s PS4 games playable on PS5 guidance. |
| PS3 discs | Check the format, not just the PlayStation brand. | PS5 does not support PS3 discs. |
| A purchase from one platform’s store | Ask whether the publisher explicitly offers cross-buy or another entitlement. | Do not assume an Xbox purchase grants a PlayStation copy, or that a PlayStation purchase grants an Xbox copy. Compatibility is not license transfer. |
Choose a model that can read your discs
If you own Xbox discs
Xbox Series S is digital-only. If your collection includes supported Xbox discs, choose a model with a disc drive, such as Series X in a configuration with a drive. The disc remains necessary to launch a supported backward-compatible disc game after its download.

If you own PS4 discs
PS4 discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. A disc-drive PS5 is required, and the PS4 disc must remain inserted to play. A disc may also be required for a disc-based PS5 upgrade offer. Check the exact PS5 model and drive arrangement available in your country before buying.
If your library is digital
Digital ownership avoids the physical-drive requirement, but it does not erase platform boundaries. On PS5, eligible PS4 digital games can be installed from the account library. Xbox’s supported digital backward-compatible titles appear in Ready to Install. In either case, use the account that owns the game and confirm that the title itself is supported.

Microsoft announced an Xbox Insider test of a disc-to-digital feature beginning August 31, 2026. The announcement described a limited test for most Xbox One and Series X disc games, not a general release or a guarantee that every disc qualifies. Treat it as unavailable unless the feature is currently offered to you and the specific game is eligible. Xbox Wire’s announcement.

Saved progress is not the same as owning the game
Sony documents ways to transfer data from PS4 or another PS5, including supported saves and games, subject to eligibility and account or source conditions. Sony says PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB. For instructions and limits, use Sony’s PS5 transfer guidance.

Progress that follows you between Xbox and PlayStation is game-specific, not automatic. Microsoft’s policy leaves cross-network progress syncing to the game developer’s discretion; it also says Microsoft Store-managed digital add-on content generally may not roam across gaming networks. Check the publisher for every must-keep save. For example, Square Enix says Outriders progress does not transfer when changing from PlayStation to Xbox. That example illustrates why platform-family assumptions are unsafe; it does not establish the policy for other games. Square Enix’s Outriders support answer.

Upgrades and add-ons have title-specific terms
A PS4-to-PS5 upgrade may be free, paid, or available only for a limited time, depending on the game. A disc-based upgrade may require a disc-drive PS5 and the original disc. Sony’s ecosystem guidance also says PS4 and cross-generation PlayStation Store purchases are available in the libraries on both PS4 and PS5; that is not a promise that every PS4 game has a PS5 upgrade. Check the game’s current terms and your region. Sony’s PS4 and PS5 ecosystem overview.

A game available through a subscription is access under the service’s current terms, not necessarily a permanent purchase. Sony says a playable PS4 PlayStation Plus game can be downloaded on PS5 while you remain a member. Check whether your particular game is currently included, whether your membership is active, and what happens if it leaves the catalog. Confirm current local subscription pricing and console pricing separately; those vary by market and are not established here.

Use this decision order
- List your must-play games. Record platform, generation, digital or disc format, add-ons, and save importance.
- Check each title’s compatibility. Use the Xbox list or Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 guidance, then confirm edge cases with the publisher.
- Match your formats to a model. If you rely on discs, eliminate digital-only models that cannot read them.
- Verify saves and cross-play individually. Do not treat cross-play, cross-save, cross-buy, and backward compatibility as interchangeable.
- Compare the real local cost. Include the console configuration you need, any game repurchases or upgrades, and subscriptions you would actually use.
If most of your priority games are already in one ecosystem and work on its current console, staying there is usually the lowest-friction choice. If your list is mixed, rank the titles you would be most disappointed to lose access to; then compare the verified compatible subset, disc needs, and save policies rather than platform loyalty alone.
What not to count as a general solution
Microsoft announced a limited Xbox backward-compatibility-on-PC early-release program in July 2026, initially naming four original Xbox games and saying existing digital console licenses for those games carried over to PC or supported handhelds. That program does not make Xbox purchases transferable to PlayStation or show that all Xbox games work on PC. Xbox Wire’s PC program announcement.
