Build S-Energy by destroying drones, use Ninja-Gum abilities and weapon matchups to create openings, and aim for an IPPON: it scores more than a standard K.O. Battle Royale is an individual contest; Team Battle rewards the combined effort of your side.
How do you play Ninjala?
Ninjala is a free-to-play Nintendo Switch action battle game built around weapons made from Ninja-Gum. Matches reward score. Defeating opponents matters, but an IPPON is worth more than an ordinary K.O., so the useful question is not only how to attack, but how to set up a decisive defeat.

A practical beginner’s loop is to build S-Energy, craft a big weapon when you can, then use attacks and gum abilities to create an IPPON opportunity. S-Energy also powers actions such as Gum Dash and S-Burst, so spending it is a choice between mobility, defense, and weapon progression.
- Destroy drones. Drones increase your S-Energy capacity. In Battle Royale, small red drones add one unit and large red drones add two. In Team Battle, green drones share their capacity increase with nearby or all teammates, depending on drone size.
- Craft a big weapon when your capacity reaches eight or more. Big weapons deal more damage, earn more points, have a secondary ability, and automatically defeat smaller weapons in a parry. The tradeoff is risk: if your weapon breaks, you are left vulnerable.
- Choose engagements with the attack triangle in mind. Normal attacks beat wide attacks, back attacks beat normal attacks, and wide attacks beat back attacks. Matching attacks can produce a parry, where you choose a follow-up attack or spend energy to escape.
- Turn an opening into an IPPON. Gum Ninjutsu can score an automatic IPPON when it defeats an opponent. Gum damage can also cause Gum Bind; defeating a bound opponent earns an IPPON.
What weapons should beginners try?
The official manual groups weapons into six families: Katana, Hammer, Yo-yo, Board, Punch, and Extra. Each family has subtypes, and their abilities and other traits differ. The manual does not establish a current strongest weapon or rank the families for beginners, so there is no supported universal best pick.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazing New Settings
Use Training Mode to try weapons before settling on one. Compare how each feels across its attack variations, Special, Gum Shoot, and mobility. Training Mode supports practice battles against computer-controlled opponents and adjustable settings, making it a useful place to learn controls and weapon-specific combos without relying on match pressure.
What is Gum Ninjutsu, and how do other Ninja-Gum actions work?
Gum Ninjutsu
Gum Ninjutsu is a charged special. Its gauge fills when you attack and gradually over time. Activate it when the gauge is ready; if it defeats an opponent, the defeat automatically scores an IPPON. Because the payoff depends on landing the defeat, look for a clear opening rather than using it without regard to the opponent’s position.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Gum Shoots and Gum Bind
Gum Shoots are fired while blowing a bubble. Shoot types have different functions and cooldowns. Enough gum damage can put an opponent into Gum Bind, which prevents them from moving or acting. Defeating a bound opponent scores an IPPON.
Gum Guard, Break Attacks, and S-Burst
Gum Guard blocks normal, back, and wide attacks, but it is vulnerable to Break Attacks. A Break Attack can overcome the guard and cause Gum Bind.
Rank #3
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
S-Burst costs at least five S-Energy and can parry an incoming move. It is not a safe answer to every attack: a Break Attack against an S-Burst stance breaks your weapon. Gum Dash also spends S-Energy, so consider whether you need the energy for a defensive burst or the movement option.
What is the difference between Battle Royale and Team Battle?
| Mode | Players and scoring | Drone effect |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Royale | Four to eight players compete individually; the player with the highest score wins. | Small red drones increase your S-Energy capacity by one; large red drones increase it by two. |
| Team Battle | Teams play two-on-two, three-on-three, or four-on-four; the team with the highest score wins. | Green drones share their S-Energy capacity increase with nearby or all teammates, depending on drone size. |
In Battle Royale, prioritize your own score and S-Energy opportunities. In Team Battle, a drone can benefit teammates too, so awareness of who is nearby can matter. The win condition remains score in both modes; a K.O. is not the only way to contribute.

Which practice and match options should you use?
- Training Mode: Practice battles against computer-controlled opponents, adjust settings, and get comfortable with your weapon’s controls and combos.
- Room Battles: Play online with friends. The manual states that Ninja-Gum is not consumed in Room Battles.
- Free Match: Wins and losses do not affect rank.
- Ranked Match: Your rank changes according to battle performance.
If you are still learning attack direction, parries, or when to spend S-Energy, begin in Training Mode. Move to Free Match when you want online battles without rank consequences, or choose Ranked Match when you are ready for rank to reflect performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a beginner focus on first?
- Watch the score, not just survival or K.O. count; an IPPON is more valuable than a standard K.O.
- Learn the normal, wide, and back attack priority cycle before committing to parries.
- Destroy drones to expand S-Energy capacity, then weigh crafting a big weapon against saving energy for movement or defense.
- Test several weapon subtypes in Training Mode rather than trusting an unsupported tier list.
- Use Gum Guard against ordinary attacks, but remember that Break Attacks can counter it and also punish an S-Burst stance.
Ninjala is Nintendo Switch download software; Nintendo lists its release date as 24 June 2020. The game’s weapons and Ninja-Gum are fictional gameplay mechanics, not real-world products.
