Valve publishes the standings monthly and uses them as the basis for direct VRS tournament invitations. Valve’s published rules explain how rankings are used, but do not give a complete current scoring formula—so there is no reliable universal points-per-win or points-per-placement figure to quote.
What VRS measures—and whose ranking it is
Valve’s VRS is an official ranking of roster performance, published monthly. It underpins direct VRS invitations to tournaments. Valve defines a roster as five specific athletes, regardless of their relationship with an organization. A team name alone is therefore not enough to establish which lineup a ranking refers to. Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook and Tournament Operating Requirements describe these roles.
Which matches and events count toward VRS?
Ranked tournaments count; unranked ones do not
Valve distinguishes ranked tournaments from unranked tournaments. A ranked event’s outcome generates data used by VRS to assess relative roster performance; an unranked event’s outcome does not. That makes an event’s status—not simply the fact that it is a CS2 competition—the key check when planning a schedule. FACEIT explains that a VRS-ranked event follows Valve’s Tournament Operating Requirements and awards points toward the standings. FACEIT’s explanation of VRS-ranked events is useful for understanding that route.
Ordinary matchmaking is not a points shortcut
The rules describe VRS in terms of tournament results, not everyday matchmaking. Do not assume that playing ranked matchmaking, entering any event, or winning any particular match automatically adds a known number of VRS points. Confirm that the competition is ranked and check its published format and invitation rules.

How teams can pursue a higher VRS position
- Choose competitions that count. Before committing resources, confirm the event is VRS-ranked under Valve’s requirements. An unranked tournament’s results do not enter the VRS process described by Valve.
- Build results with the roster that will compete. VRS is attached to five named athletes, and invite acceptance has lineup-continuity requirements. Plan competition participation and roster changes with those requirements in mind.
- Use a suitable competitive progression route. FACEIT describes progression through ESEA League divisions as a route toward ESL Pro League. This is an opportunity to compete, not a guarantee of VRS points or a particular rank increase simply for joining or advancing.
- Track the relevant monthly snapshot. Valve publishes VRS monthly. For direct invitations, tournament operators use the most recent VRS version available on the invitation date, so monitor the standings and the event’s stated invite timetable.
- Know whether the goal is an invite or a seed. Major invitation position is determined from regional VRS lists, while global VRS informs pre-event seeding after invitations are accepted.
There is no universally best route established by the rules: access to events, region, roster stability, current competitive level, and the timing of an invitation all affect which path is practical.
Roster changes can affect invitation eligibility
For direct-invite acceptance, Valve’s rules require a participating roster to include at least three athletes who were on the invited roster on the invite date. Those players must play in each match at the event. If an invitee cannot accept or declines, the operator proceeds down the VRS list to fill the announced slots. This is a continuity rule for accepting an invitation; it does not mean a roster change produces a fixed points penalty or gain.

Regional VRS, global VRS, and event seeding
Valve’s Major rules name three invitation regions: EU, Americas, and Asia. Those regional lists determine invitations. After invitations are accepted, the global VRS is used for pre-event seeding. The two lists therefore serve different purposes: a team’s regional position is relevant to Major access, while its global position contributes to seed placement.
Do not confuse VRS scoring with later Swiss-stage matchup seeding. In the Major rulebook, Swiss-stage seeding after the initial matches uses, in order, current win-loss record, difficulty score in the current stage, and initial stage seed. Difficulty score is the sum of opponents’ wins minus their losses. Valve’s example produces a score of 2 when opponents have three combined wins and one combined loss, and 0 when opponents have two wins and two losses. That event-stage calculation is not the formula for earning VRS points.

Why there is no dependable points-per-win answer
Valve’s published rules establish VRS’s purpose, monthly cadence, roster definition, ranked-versus-unranked distinction, and invitation mechanics. They do not publish a complete current calculation specification or reliable point deltas for an individual win, event finish, LAN appearance, or roster transaction. A team’s placement alone is therefore not enough to calculate a universal VRS gain.
HLTV reported on September 12, 2025 that its ranking pages added a detailed view of five sub-factors, values assigned to matches or tournament results, and explanations of how factors are calculated. Its report also described selecting a team and viewing historical snapshots. That may help readers inspect a specific displayed breakdown, but it is a secondary account and does not establish universal factor weights that should be applied to every team or snapshot. Read HLTV’s report on the VRS factor breakdown.

What to verify before planning around a VRS event
- Whether the tournament is currently VRS-ranked.
- Which VRS snapshot and invitation date the operator will use.
- Which five athletes make up the ranked roster and whether the lineup can meet invite-continuity rules.
- Whether the objective is a regional invitation position or global pre-event seeding.
- The event’s own invitation and seeding rules, which may cover mechanics beyond the VRS ranking itself.
Because standings and tournament rules can change, consult Valve’s current Tournament Operating Requirements, Major Supplemental Rulebook, and the specific event announcement when making a live invitation or roster decision.
