Can you play PS5 games on a PC with an emulator? Not reliably today. The shadPS5 project describes its software as experimental and says it is nowhere near playable. That status reflects the core challenge: a PS5 emulator must reproduce the console’s graphics, system services, memory behavior and timing—not merely run its CPU instructions.
What a PS5 emulator has to reproduce
An emulator recreates the behavior software expects from its original hardware and system software. For a PS5 game, that means more than translating instructions from the console’s processor. The emulator also has to handle graphics commands and shaders, operating-system services, memory behavior, synchronization and input, along with assumptions made by individual games.
Sony’s published specifications describe a system built around an x86-64 AMD Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2-based graphics. Sony also lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory and a custom SSD and I/O design. Those figures describe the console; they do not predict emulator speed, accuracy or compatibility. A PC’s broad similarity to the PS5’s CPU instruction family does not give it the console’s graphics interfaces, system software or device behavior. Sony’s PS5 specifications and design overview provide the hardware context.
CPU translation is only one layer
The PS5 CPU’s x86-64 architecture can make its instruction set familiar to desktop systems, but compatibility depends on how the game interacts with the entire platform. An emulator still needs to translate or reproduce console-specific behavior so that the game receives the results it expects.

Graphics and system services add separate work
The GPU path involves translating the game’s graphics commands and shaders into operations the host system can perform. The emulator must also provide equivalents for console operating-system services and coordinate work across CPU, GPU and memory. A failure or mismatch in any of these areas can prevent a game from starting, rendering correctly or continuing past a particular point.
How shadPS5 says its approach works
The open-source shadPS5 project describes a PC-oriented emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS. Its project page outlines three broad parts of its approach:
- CPU dynamic translation: translating the code a PS5 game expects to run on its processor.
- Graphics translation to Vulkan: translating GPU command packets and shaders for a Vulkan graphics path.
- High-level emulation of OS services: providing software equivalents for services games expect from the console’s system software.
These are the project’s own descriptions, not an independent technical audit. Its page also lists rendering and compatibility features as upcoming, despite describing some graphics mechanisms in present tense. That makes it important to distinguish an intended or developing implementation from a completed, usable feature. The shadPS5 project page is the source for both its stated approach and its status.

Is there a working PS5 emulator?
As of the shadPS5 page captured on October 4, 2026, the project says it is experimental and answers “Not yet” to whether users can play games. It adds: “Some things boot, some things render a frame or two, but it’s nowhere near playable.” That is the project’s self-reported status, not an independently tested compatibility result.

Booting a game or displaying an isolated frame is not the same as being able to play it. A useful compatibility assessment would need dated, title-specific evidence about whether a game starts, renders consistently, supports a complete session, and handles graphics, audio, input and timing correctly. The project page does not provide a title-by-title, independently verified compatibility table, so there is no supported count here of playable PS5 games or a dependable PC hardware recommendation.
Why compatibility remains limited
Each layer creates its own compatibility problems, and they can interact. A game might get past startup but fail when it calls a system service; it might render a frame but break when it uses a less common graphics feature; or it might appear to work while timing or synchronization errors make later play unreliable. Fixing one title’s behavior does not necessarily resolve the same issue for another game, because games can rely on the platform in different ways.

- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
That is why compatibility is better understood as a progression than a single “works” label:
- Boot: Does the game process start, or fail before launch?
- Rendering: Does it reach a menu and render consistently, or produce only isolated frames?
- Playability: Can a complete game session proceed without a blocking fault?
- Correctness: Are graphics, audio, input, timing and synchronization accurate enough?
- Evidence: Are results tied to a named game, emulator build, host hardware, operating system and game version?
Without those details, a general claim that a game “works” can mean anything from launching to functioning throughout a complete session. The available shadPS5 page does not establish a broad playable library against these criteria.

Sony’s PS4 backward-compatibility feature refers to PS4 games running on a PS5 console—not PS5 games running on a PC emulator. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while warning that some features may be unavailable and some titles may show errors or unexpected behavior. That figure is not an emulator compatibility statistic. PlayStation Support’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance describes the console feature and its limitations.

Sony’s 2020 announcement said it was evaluating PS4 games title by title to identify issues that might require adjustments from their original developers. That testing was part of Sony’s work on PS4 compatibility on its own console; it is not evidence that third-party PC emulation has solved the same—or the different—problems involved in running PS5 software.
PS4 games Sony identifies as PS5-console exceptions
At the time of the support page captured on October 4, 2026, Sony listed these PS4-only titles:
- Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One
- Just Deal With It!
- Robinson: The Journey
- We Sing
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Shadwen
Sony notes that this list may change and excludes demos, media and non-game applications. These exceptions concern PS4 games on PS5 consoles, not PS5 games in a PC emulator.

What the PS5’s specifications do—and do not—tell you
Sony’s 2020 specification article lists the PS5 CPU as an 8-core, 16-thread x86-64 AMD Zen 2 processor with variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz. It lists an RDNA 2-based graphics engine, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, 448 GB/s memory bandwidth, an 825 GB SSD and raw SSD read bandwidth of 5.5 GB/s. These are Sony-published console specifications, not minimum PC requirements or emulator performance figures.
In particular, the CPU’s x86-64 designation should not be treated as proof that PS5 games can run natively on an ordinary PC. The software still expects the console’s graphics, services and hardware behavior. The cited project does not provide an independently validated minimum PC specification that would make PS5 emulation playable.
