Yes—if your Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc is eligible and you successfully claim its digital license. You can then launch the game without putting the disc in the console, but you must keep the qualifying disc: Microsoft says the license remains conditional on possessing it and may require revalidation.
What “converting a disc to digital” means
Microsoft’s disc-to-digital feature is a separate license claim, not a consequence of installing a game from a disc. With an ordinary disc installation, the game may be installed or downloaded to the console, but the disc remains the play license and must be inserted to play. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance says this also applies to Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs used for backward-compatible games.
For a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc, a successful claim grants a limited digital license. The game can then be played without the disc in the drive, but the entitlement is still tied to continued possession of that disc. It is not an unconditional replacement for owning the disc.
How to claim the digital license
- Sign in to a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical disc drive.
- Insert the physical game disc.
- Launch the game and look for the console’s prompt to accept or claim the digital license.
- If the console offers the claim, accept it. The game should then appear in your Xbox library for supported devices.
Microsoft says not all Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs qualify. Eligibility can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, and other factors, and may change. The on-console prompt is the practical way to check a particular disc. The feature and claim steps are described on Xbox’s Series X information and disc-to-digital FAQ; Xbox Wire also explains that players claim an entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game in its August 26, 2026 announcement.

Do you need to keep the disc?
Yes. Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules describe this as a “limited access digital license” and state that it “remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.” The disc does not have to stay in the drive for every play after a successful claim, but you should not sell, give away, or otherwise part with it expecting assured access to the digital license.
Microsoft may require the license to be revalidated, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the qualifying disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from the disc.

Which Xbox consoles and discs can use it?
- Xbox One and disc-drive Xbox Series X: These are the supported disc generations named by Microsoft, provided the individual title is eligible.
- Xbox Series S and digital-only Series X: These consoles cannot read physical discs, so they cannot perform the claim directly. You need access to a supported console with an optical drive to attempt it.
- Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs: These are not identified as eligible for the current disc-to-digital claim. For backward-compatible play, Xbox says to keep the disc inserted even after installation.
Check your exact Series X model: Xbox Series X has both disc-drive and digital-only variants. The Series S is digital-only. See Xbox’s console and disc-to-digital information for current details.

A successful claim can put the game in your Xbox library for supported devices. Benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming apply only to titles that support those features; claiming a disc license does not make every game available through every service or device. Check the game’s own support and availability rather than assuming cross-device access.
