Start by getting the fit right, then tune each game for a steady frame rate rather than the highest available refresh setting. Steam Frame works both as a standalone headset and as a PC-streaming device, so the best settings depend on how—and what—you play.
Which Steam Frame settings should I change first?
Use this order: fit, refresh rate and frame limit, per-eye resolution, then throttling and motion smoothing. Change one setting at a time and judge it in the game you actually play. That makes it easier to tell whether a change improves comfort or smoothness, or simply trades detail for performance.
Valve lists a 72–144 Hz refresh-rate range for Steam Frame and identifies 144 Hz as experimental. A higher target is not automatically better: aim for a refresh rate and frame limit the game and your setup can maintain consistently. Valve’s Steamworks documentation also lists 1728×1728 per eye and 72 Hz as defaults when the corresponding app preferences are unspecified; these are documented defaults, not a universal recommended preset.
How do I make Steam Frame more comfortable?
Fit the headset before changing graphics
Adjust the headset until the image is clear and the headset rests comfortably. Valve lists a target IPD range of 60–70 mm and a maximum glasses width of 140 mm. Those specifications can help you check whether your measurements are within the published ranges, but they cannot predict individual comfort or replace careful adjustment. Valve says the core module can be separated from the headstrap for other headstrap solutions; the cited specifications do not establish a particular alternative as a fit solution for everyone.

Try dominant-eye-only rendering if available
In the SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes dated October 1, 2026, Valve describes a dominant-eye-only option under VR Settings → General. It requires advanced settings to be enabled and is presented as an accessibility option, not a general performance preset. Because this is a beta feature, availability and behavior may change.
Where are Steam Frame’s per-game video settings?
SteamVR’s per-application video settings provide controls for resolution per eye, frame limit or refresh override, throttling behavior, and motion smoothing. Use the settings for the specific application rather than assuming one profile will suit every title. Valve’s developer-facing Steamworks documentation describes these controls and the defaults applied when app preferences are unspecified.

How do I make games run more smoothly?
Choose a refresh target the game can hold
Begin with a refresh rate and frame limit that the game and your PC-streaming setup—or the standalone game itself—can sustain steadily. Raise the target only if frame pacing remains stable. Since Valve marks 144 Hz experimental, treat it as an option to evaluate rather than a goal every game should reach.
Adjust per-eye resolution in small steps
If performance is inconsistent, try lowering per-eye resolution before pursuing a higher refresh target. If the experience remains smooth, increase resolution gradually to find a useful balance between visual detail and performance headroom. This is a practical way to use the available controls, not a Valve-published test result or guaranteed improvement.

Evaluate throttling and motion smoothing by title
SteamVR offers half-framerate throttling and motion-smoothing choices. Change them per application and check the result in that game: motion smoothing does not necessarily improve comfort or visual quality for every person or title. Valve’s September 17, 2026 SteamOS 0.3.0 release notes mention a fix for per-app “Force Always-On” motion smoothing and improved motion smoothing in Alyx. Those are change-log details, not recommendations to enable a particular mode.
Does standalone play need the same settings as PCVR?
No. Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone SteamOS headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. That description comes from Valve’s Steamworks overview. In streamed PCVR, the PC and headset connection are part of the setup; in standalone play, the game runs on the headset. Tune and assess each mode separately rather than assuming the same resolution and frame-rate choices will behave identically.

When should I check for Steam Frame software updates?
If PC streaming has connection problems, compare the headset and PC software versions with Valve’s current release notes. In its October 1, 2026 SteamOS 0.4.3 beta notes, Valve said the PC also needed SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce Error 17 issues. This is dated beta-specific guidance, so check the latest notes rather than treating that version requirement as timeless.
The same beta notes report power-efficiency and battery-lifetime gains of up to 12% during streaming and local gameplay, varying with frame rate and content. The figure is Valve’s beta-release claim, not a guaranteed result for every game or setup. The September 17, 2026 SteamOS 0.3.0 notes also mention a game-dimming setting while the dashboard is visible and a change to play-area bounds behavior; these are update details to consult if those specific behaviors matter to you.

A practical tuning sequence
- Fit: Adjust the headset for a clear image and comfortable rest; check the published IPD and glasses-width ranges if relevant.
- Set a sustainable refresh target: Use the per-application SteamVR video controls and choose a target the game and setup can hold consistently.
- Balance resolution and performance: If frame pacing is unstable, reduce per-eye resolution in small steps; raise it only while play remains smooth.
- Test motion options: Try throttling and motion smoothing in the individual title, changing one option at a time.
- Separate modes: Reassess settings for standalone play and PC streaming rather than carrying over an assumption that one profile fits both.
