Digitizing a DVD or Blu-ray involves reading the disc with a compatible optical drive, saving a digital copy, and—if needed—converting it into a format suited to your devices. HandBrake can convert supported video, but it does not bypass copy protection. Whether you may copy or circumvent protection depends on your jurisdiction and the specific use; owning a disc alone does not automatically make it lawful.
What you need to digitize a disc
- A computer and compatible optical drive. A DVD drive reads DVDs; a Blu-ray-capable drive is needed for Blu-rays. Check the drive’s specifications for the formats you own and confirm DVD support if you want one drive for both.
- Software for the job. HandBrake converts supported video into a digital file. It is a transcoder, not a universal disc-ripping or decryption tool.
- Storage space. Keep the resulting files on the computer or an external HDD or SSD. How much space you need depends on your collection, whether you retain source files, and your conversion settings.
If your computer lacks a suitable drive, look for an external USB optical drive that explicitly supports the formats in your collection. Check its connection and operating-system requirements before buying; no particular drive model has been verified here.
Choose whether to keep a source copy or make a smaller file
Decide whether your priority is retaining a source copy or making a file that is smaller or more convenient for everyday playback. HandBrake can convert supported video to MP4, MKV, or WebM, and conversion can reduce file size. It always converts video rather than passing it through unchanged, so it is not the right choice for a video pass-through workflow.

Choose based on the devices you intend to use and whether you need particular audio, subtitle, or chapter information. The HandBrake documentation describes its supported formats and features, but does not establish one setting that is best for every disc or device.

Read the disc and convert the video in separate stages
- Confirm the drive can read the disc. Insert the DVD or Blu-ray in a drive that supports that format. If the computer cannot access the disc, check drive compatibility and connection before troubleshooting the conversion software.
- Determine whether the disc can be opened by your software. HandBrake says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection, and notes that many commercial DVDs and Blu-rays are protected. Its documentation names MakeMKV as an application that can create DVD or Blu-ray copies HandBrake can open. This describes a technical relationship, not a guarantee that a particular disc will work or that copying it is lawful. See the HandBrake Team’s documentation.
- Convert supported input if that suits your goal. Open an input HandBrake can read, choose an output format and settings appropriate to your playback devices, and save the converted file. HandBrake converts video; it does not make an unchanged video pass-through copy.
- Check the resulting file. Play it on the intended device and verify the selected title, language track, subtitles, chapters, and playback. Disc contents and device support vary, so check the result rather than assuming every track or feature carried over.
Understand the legal limits before copying
Technical ability to make a file and legal permission to do so are separate questions. The HandBrake Team states, “HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” It also warns: “Do not use HandBrake or any other application to copy materials you do not own or have the right to copy.” Those statements describe the software’s scope; they do not decide what your local law permits.
In the United States, the Copyright Office’s 37 CFR § 201.40 sets out specific, conditional classes of works and uses exempted from the circumvention prohibition. Among them are narrowly described uses of short portions of lawfully made and acquired DVD or Blu-ray motion pictures for specified criticism, comment, or educational purposes, subject to conditions. Separate provisions address accessibility work by educational institutions and preservation by eligible libraries, archives, or museums. These are not a general personal-viewing exemption, and owning a disc does not by itself grant permission to circumvent access controls or make a digital copy. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Copyright Law of the United States publication says it incorporates amendments enacted through December 18, 2025.

Save finished files somewhere with enough free space, such as an internal drive or external HDD or SSD. If you keep both source copies and smaller converted versions, plan for both; the appropriate capacity depends on the number of discs and your chosen outputs. Give files clear names and keep track of language, subtitle, or edition choices so you can identify the right version later.
