Best all-round pick: Panasonic DP-UB820. It combines broad HDR support with useful home-theater connections, making it a strong shortlist choice for a system built around physical discs. What Hi-Fi? also names it best overall in its 2026 guide, while Panasonic’s US store lists the DP-UB820-K; these are published recommendations and manufacturer listings, not results from our own testing. Compare it with your display, receiver or soundbar, disc collection and budget before buying.
Which 4K Blu-ray player should you buy?
Start with the Panasonic DP-UB820 if you want a versatile player for a modern home theater. What Hi-Fi? calls it best overall in its 2026 Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray player guide. Panasonic’s current US collection lists the DP-UB820-K at $649.99 on the accessed page; that live listing price can change, and the model suffix and specifications vary by region.
The alternatives make sense for narrower needs: consider the Panasonic DP-UB9000 if its premium design and features suit your system and budget, or look at Sony’s UBP-X700U as a budget option identified in Crutchfield’s 2026 guide. Sony’s UBP-X800M2 is another option if its documented HDR support and connections match your setup.

Match HDR to your TV or projector
HDR formats are not interchangeable. A player can send a format only when the disc, player and display support the relevant playback path; it cannot add Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or another display capability your TV or projector lacks. Check the precise format support for the player’s regional model and the display input you plan to use.
- Panasonic DP-UB820: Panasonic Australia documents HDR Optimizer, and What Hi-Fi? describes the player as supporting the main HDR formats. Check your local model’s specification before relying on a particular format.
- Sony UBP-X800M2: Sony lists Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG playback for compatible discs and displays. This does not establish support for HDR10+.
- Panasonic DP-UB9000: Panasonic UK lists HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HDR Optimiser for the DP-UB9000EB. Do not assume every regional DP-UB9000 variant is identical.
- Sony UBP-X700U: Crutchfield’s 2026 guide lists HDR10 and Dolby Vision; verify the exact version and its current listing.
For the DP-UB820, Panasonic’s regional details are available on its Australia product page. Sony’s supported formats are listed on its UBP-X800M2 page.

- Stunning picture with 4K upscaling up to 60p

Check the full audio path for Atmos or DTS:X
A disc’s soundtrack alone does not guarantee immersive sound. Confirm that the disc includes the Atmos or DTS:X track you want, the player is configured to output it, and the receiver or soundbar supports that format. The connection between the player and the audio equipment must also carry the needed signal. If the audio system cannot decode or pass it through, the intended immersive track may not reach your speakers as intended. What Hi-Fi? recommends compatible audio equipment for immersive playback.
The DP-UB820’s Australia specifications include twin HDMI outputs and 7.1-channel analogue audio, which can offer connection flexibility in some systems. Verify the exact ports on the model sold in your region and plan the signal route through your receiver or soundbar before purchase.

Consider your disc library and connection needs
A dedicated 4K player can also play standard Blu-rays and DVDs, so it can serve a mixed disc collection rather than only UHD discs. If you watch many older Blu-rays, check the player’s upscaling features and published review coverage; upscaling does not turn a lower-resolution disc into native 4K detail.
Use these checks to narrow the choice:
- Disc types: Confirm that the player supports the formats in your collection, especially if you rely on older discs.
- Video connections: Count the HDMI outputs you need and check whether your receiver, soundbar and display can be connected in your preferred arrangement.
- Audio connections: Compare digital and analogue outputs with the inputs your audio equipment actually has.
- Networking: Decide whether you need network access or streaming apps. The DP-UB820’s Australia page lists networking, but app availability and software support can vary by region and over time.
- Placement and installation: A high-speed HDMI cable may be needed depending on the equipment and cable run. Choose one that meets the system’s requirements; the cited guidance does not establish that an expensive cable improves image quality.
Set up the player with your home theater
- Connect the player to a 4K TV or projector. Use an HDMI input that supports the video features you intend to use, and check the display’s manual if inputs differ.
- Verify HDR compatibility at both ends. Check the exact player model and the display’s supported formats rather than assuming all HDR labels mean the same thing.
- Route audio through compatible equipment. For Atmos or DTS:X, confirm the disc soundtrack, player output setting, receiver or soundbar decoding support, and connection path.
- Test a disc from your collection. Check video, audio and remote-control behavior with the types of discs you plan to watch before relying on the setup.
When the premium Panasonic DP-UB9000 is worth considering
The DP-UB9000 is positioned as a premium alternative, not an automatic upgrade for every system. Panasonic UK describes the DP-UB9000EB as a reference-design player and documents HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HDR Optimiser. Those features are most relevant if they match your display and discs, and the premium price fits your budget. Panasonic’s US collection lists a different regional code, DP-UB9000P1K, so confirm the specifications of the unit sold in your market rather than transferring UK details to it.
