A good choice fits your child’s age and interests, works on your computer, and offers online and spending settings that match your family’s rules. Based on the available title-specific guidance, Minecraft is a clear PC option for creative building and exploration; Roblox needs closer review because it hosts many user-created experiences rather than one fixed game.
How to choose a computer game for your child
Start with the child and the experience you want—not a universal ranking. Common Sense Media organizes suggestions into age bands, and its comparison of Minecraft and Roblox recommends considering a child’s age, experience, and interests. Ratings can help assess content suitability, but they do not guarantee that a child will enjoy a game or be ready for its online features.

Minecraft: a PC choice for creative building
Minecraft is an open-ended game centered on building and exploration, making it a candidate for children who like creating their own projects and worlds. Its official Parents’ Guide lists a recommended PEGI 7 rating and an ESRB Everyone 10+ rating. These are different regional rating systems; check the one used where you live rather than treating either as a universal age rule.
ESRB distinguishes Minecraft: Java Edition, available for PC, Mac, and Linux, from Bedrock Edition, which includes Windows 10 and 11 as well as consoles and mobile devices. What to know about multiplayer
Multiplayer changes the experience from solo building and exploration to playing with others. Minecraft’s parent guide describes family settings and multiplayer controls, and notes that only adult accounts can change child family settings such as multiplayer access. ESRB also advises parents to monitor which servers children join. Review the available settings and server access with your child before enabling online play.
Does Minecraft teach coding?
Common Sense Media’s comparison says both Minecraft and Roblox can introduce coding concepts and gives Minecraft an education-friendly edge. That is an editorial assessment, not evidence of a measured learning outcome or a guarantee that playing the game will teach a particular skill.

Roblox: review the individual experience
Roblox is a platform for user-created experiences, not a single game with one consistent style or content level. That variety may appeal to children, but parents should review the specific experience as well as the platform’s communication and purchase settings.
An ESRB guide updated August 6, 2025 reports a Teen rating for Roblox, with the content descriptor “Diverse Content: Discretion Advised” and the interactive elements “Users Interact” and “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).” These are ESRB’s reported descriptors, not a guarantee about every user-created experience. Check the current listing and settings before your child plays. A platform-wide label alone does not establish that Roblox is categorically safe or unsafe for a particular child.
