Forza Horizon 6 is set in Japan. Playground Games confirmed the destination on September 25, 2025, then showed the first gameplay on January 22, 2026. The game’s world brings together Tokyo-inspired streets, mountain passes, rural routes and seasonal scenery—but it is a condensed interpretation built for an open-world racing game, not a faithful map of Japan.
When Forza Horizon 6 revealed Japan—and what came later
The Japan announcement came during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show livestream on September 25, 2025. Playground Games called Japan a highly requested destination among the Forza Horizon community. That reveal confirmed the setting; it was not a gameplay presentation. (Playground Games’ announcement)
The first gameplay arrived at Xbox Developer_Direct on January 22, 2026. In that announcement, Playground Games gave May 19, 2026 as the release date for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Premium Edition early access scheduled to start May 15. It also said a PlayStation 5 version was planned for later in 2026. Those dates and the PS5 timing are the plans stated in the January announcement. (First-gameplay and release announcement)
What the Japan map includes
The official map reveal describes a dense, vertically varied world spanning city and countryside, modern and traditional environments, and multiple biomes. Named locations and route inspirations include Tokyo City, the C1 loop, Ginkgo Avenue, Mt. Haruna and the Bandai Azuma mountain passes. These are ingredients in a designed game world, not a promise that the real roads or distances have been reproduced one for one. (Full map reveal)

That distinction is deliberate. Playground Games Design Director Torben Ellert told Xbox Wire: “It’s easy to think of an authentic space as a recreation of a place, but it’s less about that accuracy, and more about the feel of it,” Ellert explains. He also put the approach this way: “You don’t recreate every corner – you recreate the experience of having something revealed when you get there.” (Xbox Wire interview with Ellert)
How seasons and events shape driving
Playground Games’ feature overview says the returning seasonal system brings more dramatic variation than in Mexico. Japan’s alpine region is a special case: snow is available there year-round when players equip snow tires. The same overview introduces Horizon Rush obstacle-course events as part of progression toward becoming a Horizon Legend. What players can do together—and build
The announced shared-world activities include Time Attack Circuits, Car Meets and Drag Meets. For customization and creation, the overview describes garages players can customize, The Estate as a buildable space in the open world, and Horizon CoLab for collaborative EventLab construction. Garages and The Estate support solo building; CoLab is the collaborative option. The feature overview also lists Aftermarket Cars, proximity radar, revised audio, window liveries, separate front and rear rim choices, cosmetic tire wear, and steering animations with up to 540 degrees of wheel rotation. Platforms, Game Pass and cross-progression
The January launch announcement named Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Microsoft Store and Steam, and said Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members could play from May 19. Its access details included Xbox Series X|S for Ultimate, PC through the Xbox app, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The same announcement described PS5 as planned for later in 2026. The January gameplay announcement identified the cover cars as the 2025 GR GT Prototype and 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser. It also described a pre-tuned Ferrari J50 as a preorder bonus for purchases made before launch at that time; that is a historical offer, not confirmation that it remains available.
