Nintendo Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 controllers attach with magnets, not the original Switch’s sliding rails. To remove one, press the button on the back: Nintendo says it disengages the magnetic lock. The button’s function is clear; the more detailed account of how it pushes the controller away comes from a later guide, not Nintendo’s product description.

How Joy-Con 2 attaches to Switch 2

Bring a Joy-Con 2 close to the side of the console and its magnetic connector snaps into place. Nintendo says the magnets hold the controller firmly. The company confirmed the magnetic connectors in its April 2, 2025 Switch 2 announcement; its Switch 2 hardware page explains how to attach and detach the controllers.

How do I remove the Joy-Con from the Switch 2?

  1. Hold the console securely.

  2. Press the release button on the back of the Joy-Con 2 you want to remove.

  3. Once the magnetic lock disengages, lift the controller away from the console.

Nintendo’s product page describes the button’s role as disengaging the magnetic lock. It does not explain the internal mechanism. A June 2026 guide from Nintendo Life adds that pressing the button makes a small pin protrude from the side and push the controller away. That mechanical description is the guide’s account, rather than an explanation published by Nintendo.

What changed from the original Joy-Con?

Feature Original Switch Joy-Con Switch 2 Joy-Con 2
Attachment Slides onto the console’s rails, as described in Nintendo Life’s comparison guide. Attaches by magnetic connectors, confirmed by Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement and hardware page.
Detachment Uses the rail release, as described in Nintendo Life’s comparison guide. Press the rear button to disengage the magnetic lock, according to Nintendo’s hardware page.
Sticks and buttons Not stated in the cited comparison material. Nintendo says the sticks and some buttons are larger.
Additional input mode Not stated in the cited comparison material. Both Joy-Con 2 controllers have mouse sensors for compatible games, according to Nintendo.

What else is different about Joy-Con 2?

Both controllers include mouse sensors that can be used in compatible games. Nintendo notes that mouse responsiveness may vary depending on the surface. Nintendo also lists HD rumble 2 and a C Button among the system’s features; the C Button is on the right Joy-Con 2. Separately sold Joy-Con 2 wheels are an accessory for using the controllers in play.

Can I use my old Joy-Con with Switch 2?

Nintendo Life’s June 2026 comparison guide says original Joy-Con can be used wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console body. That is a compatibility distinction: wireless use is possible, while the old rail attachment does not fit the new console’s magnetic connection.

What the early release-action report got right

HotHardware’s January 22, 2025 story, published after Nintendo’s January 16 first-look trailer, described the new attachment as appearing magnetic while noting that the release mechanism was not fully clear from the teaser. Nintendo later confirmed the magnetic connection and the rear button’s purpose on its product page. That confirmation establishes how to release Joy-Con 2; it does not establish claims about improved durability, reduced damage, or faster removal.
