For a modern stealth-first experience, start with Assassin’s Creed Mirage; for dialogue choices and a long Greek adventure, choose Odyssey; for Viking raids and settlement-building, choose Valhalla. If you want to switch between a stealth specialist and a combat-focused character, look at Shadows.
Choose by the kind of play you enjoy
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth, parkour, investigations, and planned assassinations | Assassin’s Creed Mirage | It puts stealth, gadgets, scouting, and target investigations at the center of its Baghdad adventure. |
| The early series formula and its original setting | Assassin’s Creed (2007) | Its core activities include stalking targets, climbing, blending into crowds, and sword duels in the Crusades-era Holy Land. |
| Dialogue choices, RPG progression, and a large Greek adventure | Assassin’s Creed Odyssey | Decisions shape events, with multiple endings, extensive choice dialogue, exploration, naval combat, and large battles. |
| Viking combat, raids, alliances, and establishing a settlement | Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Its central premise follows a Viking clan forging a home in ninth-century England through raids and alliances. |
| Ancient Egypt, exploration, quests, and weapon-based combat | Assassin’s Creed Origins | It shifts toward a broad Egyptian setting, story quests, varied weapons, and a redesigned combat system. |
| A choice between stealth and direct combat | Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Naoe specializes in shinobi stealth and infiltration; Yasuke is oriented toward combat. |
These are fits based on Ubisoft’s descriptions of each game, not an objective ranking or a claim that one is best for every player.
If stealth and assassinations matter most
Choose Mirage for a modern stealth-first entry
Mirage is the clearest fit among these modern choices if you prefer to avoid open fights and prepare before striking. Its fragile protagonist, Basim, relies on hiding places, tools, parkour, scouting, and investigations in a dense Baghdad. Ubisoft describes the game as a return toward the series’ stealth roots. Its official page also notes a free Valley of Memory update and mission replay.
Choose the original for the early template
The 2007 Assassin’s Creed is the starting point for the series and a useful pick if you want its original structure: observe targets, climb, use crowds to blend in, then fight with historical weapons when needed. Its older design and pacing differ from newer games, so choose it for the early formula rather than expecting the feel of a modern release.

Choose Shadows if you want stealth with another option
Shadows is a better fit than Mirage if you want stealth as one approach within a game that also supports a combat-oriented protagonist. Naoe’s shinobi tools and infiltration focus contrast with Yasuke’s direct-combat style; their skills, stats, progression, and gear differ.
If you want RPG choices, progression, or a big world
Odyssey: choices and a Greek mercenary journey
Odyssey makes player choice a major part of its pitch. Ubisoft describes decisions that shape events, multiple endings, and more than 30 hours of choice dialogue. That dialogue figure is not a total playtime estimate. The game also centers on exploring Ancient Greece, naval combat, and large battles, with Alexios or Kassandra as the protagonist.

Valhalla: raids, alliances, and a clan’s settlement
Valhalla also foregrounds RPG mechanics, but its defining activities are different: lead a Viking clan, raid, fight, and forge alliances while establishing a home in England. Choose it if that Viking settlement fantasy appeals more than Odyssey’s Greek mercenary journey and naval focus.
Origins: exploration and the RPG-era redesign
Origins is the earlier of these three RPG-era redesigns. It moves away from the compact-city emphasis of earlier entries toward exploration across Ancient Egypt, story quests, and weapon-and-loot combat. Its Discovery Tour presents Egypt through guided tours curated by historians and Egyptologists.

How combat and stealth kills differ
Stealth does not work identically across the RPG-era games. Ubisoft’s account of the series’ stealth systems notes that Origins and Odyssey shifted from guaranteed stealth kills toward stealth damage until the relevant upgrades. Valhalla included a setting for instantly lethal Hidden Blade kills or a timing challenge, while Mirage was designed with stealth in mind.
For direct fighting, Shadows offers the clearest character contrast: Yasuke is combat-oriented, while Naoe favors stealth. Valhalla emphasizes Viking fighting, raids, and weapons; Origins emphasizes its rebuilt combat system and weapon variety. These are differences in design, not a universal verdict about which combat feels best.

Before you choose or buy
- Decide what you want to repeat. Choose based on the activity you expect to enjoy throughout the game—investigating and sneaking, exploring and making choices, raiding, or fighting—not just the historical setting.
- Check platform compatibility on the current official game page. Availability varies by title and can change. Ubisoft’s pages have listed different supported systems across these games, so verify the exact game, platform, and edition before purchasing.
- Don’t treat the franchise’s scale as a quality ranking. Ubisoft says the series has transported “more than 140 million players through history”; its franchise page does not state a year for that figure.
The series combines historical open-world action-adventure with stealth and RPG elements, but each entry changes the balance. Use the activity you most want to play as your deciding factor.
