PvE, PvP, and PvPvE Explained: What Each Mode Means

PvE means facing game-controlled challenges, PvP means competing against human players, and PvPvE combines both. Here’s what each label tells you—and what it doesn’t.

PvE pits players against game-controlled challenges; PvP pits human players against one another; PvPvE combines human opponents with AI-controlled enemies or hazards. The labels tell you who or what you may face—not the full objective, team rules, difficulty, rewards, or consequences of failure.

What do PvE, PvP, and PvPvE mean?

Mode Main opposition Typical player dynamic What the label does not settle
PvE (player versus environment) AI-controlled opponents or other game-controlled challenges. Players may cooperate against the game, or tackle a challenge alone. The mission, difficulty, team size, rewards, and whether players can interfere with one another.
PvP (player versus player) Other human players. Players or teams compete, sometimes over an objective rather than eliminations. The team format, victory condition, available objectives, and consequences of losing.
PvPvE (player versus player versus environment) Both human opponents and game-controlled enemies or hazards. Players face the game’s threats while also competing with other players; whether they can avoid or cooperate with one another varies. How much of the encounter is PvP or PvE, whether conflict is avoidable, and what happens to progress or rewards.

PvE: players versus game-controlled challenges

PvE stands for “player versus environment.” Epic Games defines it as a game in which players compete against AI-controlled opponents in its Fortnite glossary. In practice, the “environment” can mean enemies, hazards, or other challenges controlled by the game.

Fortnite’s Save the World is a cooperative example: players defend against monster hordes, using building, crafting, loot, and progression. That does not make every PvE mode cooperative; the acronym identifies the opposition, not whether you play with a group.

PvP: human players compete

PvP means “player versus player.” Epic’s glossary uses the term for gaming scenarios where players compete against one another. A match can be individual or team-based, and the contest may be about completing an objective rather than simply defeating every opponent.

Ubisoft’s launch-era Rainbow Six Siege guide gives an objective-focused example: Attackers and Defenders compete in modes such as Bomb and Hostage. Treat that guide as an example of how PvP can work, not as confirmation that its listed modes or rules remain available today.

PvPvE: human rivals and in-game threats together

PvPvE describes a mixed encounter: players contend with both other people and game-controlled threats. AI enemies may pressure players while rivals pursue their own goals, adding a second source of danger and uncertainty.

The balance and rules are game-specific. In its FAQ, last updated 15 September 2026, Active Matter says players fight other people and monsters, and that some locations are PvPvE while others are exclusively PvP or PvE. The label therefore does not guarantee that every area in a game uses the same format—or that players must fight each other whenever they meet.

  • Who can attack you? In PvE, identify whether other players can still harm or obstruct you. In PvPvE, find out whether rival players are always hostile, can be avoided, or can temporarily cooperate.
  • What is the objective? A PvP match may be decided by an objective, not eliminations; a PvE mission may focus on survival or completion. The acronym itself does not name the win condition.
  • What happens when you fail? Check whether defeat costs progress, items, or a chance to extract. Those consequences are game rules, not part of the label.
  • Is the label for the whole game or one activity? A game can offer distinct PvE, PvP, and PvPvE locations or playlists, as Active Matter’s FAQ illustrates.

As a quick decision aid, compare four things: opponent type, how players interact, the objective, and the risk of failure. The first two are signaled by the mode label; the last two need confirmation in the specific game’s rules.
