Why Overwatch 2’s Frame-Rate Cap Reached 600 FPS in 2022

NVIDIA tied Overwatch 2’s launch-era 600 FPS cap to RTX 40 Series speed, but the cap was not a guaranteed RTX 4090 frame rate—and current behavior remains unverified.

At Overwatch 2’s October 2022 launch, NVIDIA said Blizzard had raised the game’s frame-rate cap to 600 frames per second (FPS), up from 400 FPS in the original Overwatch. NVIDIA linked the change to the speed of GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, including the RTX 4090. That figure is the game’s reported software cap—not a guarantee that an RTX 4090 will render every match at 600 FPS, or confirmation of the cap in the October 2026 game build.

What NVIDIA said about the 600 FPS cap

NVIDIA’s October 4, 2022 launch article says Blizzard increased Overwatch 2’s cap from the original game’s 400 FPS to 600 FPS. A few days earlier, NVIDIA senior director of product management Justin Walker told PC Gamer that the 40-series cards were fast enough for Blizzard to raise the cap. That is Walker’s account of the decision, not a direct statement from a Blizzard developer explaining why it was made. PC Gamer’s September 22, 2022 report and NVIDIA’s October 4, 2022 launch coverage provide the contemporaneous accounts.

The claim is easy to misread: a 600 FPS cap sets a ceiling the game is allowed to reach. It does not mean a particular graphics card will produce 600 frames each second. Actual output depends on the whole PC and the game workload.

Can an RTX 4090 run Overwatch 2 at 600 FPS?

The launch-era coverage does not establish 600 FPS as a consistent RTX 4090 result. PC Gamer reported an NVIDIA demonstration above 460 FPS at 1440p and noted that the CPU can limit performance. NVIDIA separately claimed that RTX 40 Series performance could exceed 500 FPS at 1440p. Those figures refer to a reported demo and NVIDIA’s own launch claims, respectively; they are not a controlled, independent benchmark of typical RTX 4090 performance.

  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.

NVIDIA also advertised system latency as low as 8 milliseconds and claimed Reflex could reduce latency by “up to 60%.” Both are NVIDIA’s launch-era figures, not universal outcomes for every player or system. No independent, named statistical study in the available coverage verifies those results.

Why the cap and the measured frame rate differ

  • Cap versus output: The cap is the upper limit; the rendered frame rate can be lower.
  • CPU and match workload: A fast GPU may be held back elsewhere in the system, and busy scenes can affect performance. The PC Gamer account specifically flags CPU choice as a constraint.
  • Resolution and settings: The cited launch claims concern 1440p, not every resolution or graphics preset.
  • Display refresh rate: A game’s FPS counter and a monitor’s refresh rate measure different things. A 600 FPS cap does not require a 600 Hz monitor; NVIDIA’s launch article discussed 360 Hz esports displays as a category for competitive play.

What settings Blizzard recommended at launch

Blizzard’s launch-era developer guidance recommended matching the frame-rate cap to the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. It also advised enabling NVIDIA Reflex + Boost on NVIDIA graphics cards, or Reduced Buffering on other GPUs, and turning on High Precision Mouse Input. These are the recommendations documented at launch, not verified as the best settings for every current system or game build. Blizzard’s developer blog gives the original guidance.

What is—and is not—confirmed today

The cited coverage dates from September and October 2022. It documents what NVIDIA reported around Overwatch 2’s launch, plus Blizzard’s settings guidance from that period. It does not verify the cap or patch-specific performance behavior in the October 2026 version of the game. A later claim about the current build would need current confirmation.

TechSpot’s September 26, 2022 coverage also discussed the raised cap, while noting that the prior 400 FPS figure was not independently confirmed in its report. TechSpot’s account is a secondary cross-check, not a substitute for a Blizzard statement.
