WoW Midnight Patch Notes: Unholy DK’s Nerf—and Blizzard’s Follow-Up Buffs

Blizzard’s Unholy DK story moved from July PTR area-damage cuts to October raid buffs. Here are the changes, their build context, and what the notes don’t prove.

The Unholy Death Knight changes in the World of Warcraft: Midnight notes were not a single, continuing nerf. Blizzard first reduced several sources of Unholy’s area damage in July PTR notes, then softened an overall reduction in a later PTR update. On October 1, 2026, it announced raid-damage buffs—including changes aimed at bringing the Blightfall build closer to its pre-bug-fix state. Those October changes explicitly do not apply in PvP.

What changed for Unholy Death Knights?

The timeline matters: the July changes were PTR tuning directed at area damage, while the October 1 hotfix adjusted multiple effects to increase raid damage. The published percentages affect different abilities and builds, so they cannot be added together to calculate a net DPS change.

Date and update What Blizzard changed Context
July 31, 2026 — Curse of Ula’tek PTR development notes Reduced several area-damage sources, while increasing auto-attacks and the Venomous Abyss tier set. PTR notes said Unholy area damage was higher than intended. [Blizzard’s July 31 PTR notes]
Later Curse of Ula’tek PTR note Adjusted the overall damage reduction from 8% to 3%. The same note included a fix involving Nazgrim’s Conquest when Magus of the Dead is sacrificed for Lord of the Dead. [Blizzard’s Curse of Ula’tek PTR notes]
October 1, 2026 — hotfix Raised damage from several effects, including Scourging, Blightfall, Infliction of Sorrow, Thrill of Blood, and Frenzied Bloodthirst. Blizzard said it wanted to increase Unholy’s raid damage and move Blightfall closer to its pre-bug-fix state. The changes do not apply in PvP. [Blizzard’s October 1 hotfix notes]

What did the July PTR tuning reduce or increase?

Blizzard’s July 31 explanation was that “Unholy Death Knight’s area damage has been higher than intended.” The notes listed reductions to three damage-over-time sources, paired with increases to melee damage and the Venomous Abyss tier set. These are the values in that PTR passage; they should not be read as a complete statement of the current live configuration.

Effect in the July 31 PTR passage Change
Virulent Plague damage Reduced by 10%
Forbidden Knowledge’s Graveyard damage Reduced by 15%
Epidemic damage Reduced by 12%
Auto-attack damage Increased by 100%
Venomous Abyss set’s Necrotic Bolt and Withering Grasp damage Increased by 25%

A later PTR note changed the overall damage reduction from 8% to 3%. That adjustment is separate from the specific ability changes listed above, and the notes do not provide enough information to calculate the combined live effect of every adjustment.

What did the October 1 hotfix buff?

Blizzard framed the October 1 changes as an effort to raise Unholy’s damage in raids. It also said it was aiming to bring the Blightfall build back toward where it had been before bug fixes made it no longer viable. The listed changes were:

  • Scourging: Plagues erupt at 65%/100%, up from 50%/70%.
  • Blightfall: Deals 200% of remaining plague damage, up from 100%.
  • San’layn’s Infliction of Sorrow: Vampiric Strike erupts plagues with 75% increased effectiveness, up from 30%.
  • Thrill of Blood: Increases Dread Plague damage by 20%, up from 10%.
  • Frenzied Bloodthirst: Increases Death Coil and Death Strike damage by 5% per stack.

Every change in this October 1 Unholy list is explicitly excluded from PvP combat. The hotfix archive labels the entry October 1, although the page metadata says it was published October 2; the date above follows the archive entry. [Blizzard’s hotfix archive]

Why does Blizzard mention Blightfall’s pre-fix state?

The same October archive separately records a September 23 fix for Blightfall dealing less damage as more time passed after a plague was applied. That provides context for Blizzard’s stated goal of moving the build toward its pre-bug-fix state. It does not establish that the September fix restored the build’s performance, or quantify how much the October adjustment changed it.

Does this mean Unholy is now strong—or that Blizzard reversed the nerf?

The notes show a change in direction, not a measured verdict on Unholy’s current strength. The July PTR rationale concerned area damage; the October hotfix focused on raid output and named effects associated with Blightfall, San’layn, and other talents. Because the affected damage sources and build contexts differ, the percentages are not a direct before-and-after DPS comparison.

Blizzard’s published notes establish its stated intent and the listed tuning values. They do not include current parse data, encounter-by-encounter rankings, or measured live DPS before and after the hotfix. So they support saying that Blizzard followed the earlier PTR reductions with raid-damage buffs—not that Unholy is definitively struggling, strong, or fully restored.
