One family-owned copy of a Steam game lets one family member play it at a time. To have two people play the same co-op game simultaneously through Steam Families, the family needs two eligible copies. Steam’s current system is called Steam Families; “Family Sharing” is still a common name for the feature. Eligibility is set game by game, so check the title before planning a session.
How Steam Families works
Steam Families gives members access to eligible games owned by other members, while each person keeps ownership of the games they bought. Steam says a family can include up to six members and that families are intended for close family members in a household. Each person plays using their own Steam account. The shared games appear in a family library, but sharing a game does not transfer ownership to the person playing it.
Can two family members play the same co-op game at once?
Only if the family has enough copies of that game. One family-owned copy supports one player at a time; two copies can support two simultaneous players. Valve illustrates the rule with Portal 2: one copy can be played by one family member at a time, while a second family copy allows another member to play simultaneously. This is a copy-count rule for the particular title, not a lock on the purchaser’s entire library: members can play different eligible family games at the same time. Steam Families User Guide & FAQ

When several members own the same game, Steam lets the player choose which member’s copy to use. If that copy is already in use, another available copy may be used instead. Different DLC can affect whether a save works, so check the content and save requirements for the game you plan to play.
Check whether the co-op game is shareable
Having a copy in the family does not guarantee that other members can access it. The publisher controls a game’s sharing eligibility and may opt out. Steam lists several reasons a game or DLC may not be shareable:

- It is free-to-play, or is DLC for a free-to-play game.
- It or its DLC is region-restricted.
- It does not support the other member’s operating system.
- The publisher has excluded it from sharing.
- The owner has marked it private.
Some exclusions from the older Family Sharing system carry over to Steam Families. Settings can change, so check the game’s current Steam Store page and whether it appears in the family library rather than assuming a particular co-op title is eligible. Steam Families User Guide & FAQ
What happens to achievements, saves, DLC, and offline play?
- Achievements: Each player earns achievements on their own Steam account.
- Saves: Save behavior depends on the game. Different DLC available with the copy being played can affect save compatibility.
- DLC: A borrower may be able to use DLC owned by the game’s owner if the publisher has made that DLC shareable.
- Offline play: A family-library game can be played offline only if that game supports Family Sharing.

Steam Families is not Remote Play Together
Steam Families provides access to eligible games owned by family members. Remote Play Together is a separate feature for sharing a local co-op game online with friends. It can help when a game offers local co-op but not native online multiplayer; it does not grant game ownership, change sharing eligibility, or remove Steam Families’ copy-count rule for two people independently playing the same title.
Before starting, check whether the game has native online co-op or local co-op that works with Remote Play Together. Confirm its sharing eligibility, the number of family copies needed, whether required DLC is shareable, and whether it needs an online service or account.

Family membership and invitations
Steam’s current FAQ says adults can leave a family, but must wait one year from joining before creating or joining another family. A family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can take a vacated slot. Someone may rejoin the last family they left without waiting if it has fewer than six members.
