If a Nintendo eShop payment fails on a Japanese account, first confirm the Nintendo Account country/region is set to Japan, then check whether your payment method is eligible for that storefront and device. Next, check your balance and family purchase restrictions. If you use a Japanese prepaid code, the account must be set to Japan. Nintendo’s guidance explains these common restrictions, but it does not identify why a particular bank declined a transaction or give a universal fix for every error code.
1. Confirm you are using the Japan eShop
Check the Nintendo Account’s country/region setting and make sure you are using the corresponding Japan storefront. Nintendo’s Switch eShop instructions apply to accounts whose country/region is Japan: Nintendo Switch eShop purchase procedure.

If the account is set to another country or region, do not assume a Japanese-market payment code will work. Check the account setting before trying the transaction again.
2. Check whether your payment method is compatible
Payment rules depend on the console model and the route you use. For Switch 2 balance top-ups in the Japan eShop, Nintendo lists credit card, PayPal, and prepaid card, but says foreign-issued credit cards, PayPal accounts opened abroad, and prepaid cards sold abroad cannot be used there: Nintendo Switch 2: Adding funds to the eShop. This restriction is documented for Switch 2; do not automatically apply it to a different model.

For Switch, Nintendo documents credit card, prepaid card number, and PayPal as console balance top-up methods. The Nintendo Account website’s balance-add flow accepts prepaid codes; credit card and PayPal are not available through that web flow. See Nintendo Switch: Adding funds to the eShop.
| Route | What Nintendo documents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Switch console | Credit card, prepaid card number, or PayPal for adding balance. | Confirm the account storefront and whether the card or PayPal payment can be used for that transaction. |
| Switch 2 Japan eShop | Credit card, PayPal, or prepaid card for adding balance. | Foreign-issued cards, PayPal accounts opened abroad, and prepaid cards sold abroad are not accepted for this Japan eShop top-up. |
| Nintendo Account website | Prepaid code for adding balance; credit card and PayPal are unavailable through this flow. | Make sure the code is intended for Japan and redeem it on the correct account. |
3. Check your balance and add funds through the right route
Nintendo says digital purchases require sufficient account balance. On Switch, open the eShop, go to the account information screen, select the current balance, and choose the option to add funds. Choose one of the methods documented for the console flow. If you use the Nintendo Account website instead, use a prepaid code; that web flow does not offer credit-card or PayPal top-ups.

Before confirming a purchase or code redemption, verify that the active Nintendo Account is the one you intend to use. Balance belongs to an individual Nintendo Account, cannot be merged across accounts, and is nonrefundable. Digital product purchases are also nonrefundable. Nintendo’s account and balance information is available at Nintendo Switch eShop frequently asked questions.
4. If a Japanese prepaid card or download code will not redeem
Check both the code’s intended region and the account country/region. Nintendo Support Japan states: 「日本国内向けに販売されているダウンロードカードやプリペイドカードの番号は、ニンテンドーアカウントの『国/地域』設定が『日本』になっていないと引き換えできません。」 In other words, Japanese-market download and prepaid card codes can be redeemed only when the Nintendo Account country/region is Japan. See Nintendo’s Switch eShop purchase procedure.

- Check the account’s country/region setting before entering the code.
- If buying a card, verify that the specific card is for Japan; a prepaid card from another market is not an equivalent substitute.
- Use the intended Nintendo Account. Once funds are added, they cannot be moved to another account.
5. Check family purchase restrictions
A family-group purchase restriction can block purchases made with existing balance and can also block credit-card balance additions. Nintendo says adding balance with a prepaid code is not restricted by that setting, but the restriction can still prevent spending the balance on goods afterward. Review the family settings if a valid payment method or balance is present but the purchase remains blocked: Nintendo family-group purchase restrictions.
6. Treat renewal and preorder errors separately
Nintendo Switch Online automatic renewal
If a card or PayPal renewal payment fails, the renewal does not complete and automatic renewal is turned off. Renewal using balance alone also fails and turns off automatic renewal if the balance is insufficient. Check the membership’s renewal status after the payment error rather than assuming another attempt is scheduled. Nintendo explains these cases at Nintendo Switch Online automatic renewal.

Preorders
A preorder paid for with balance alone is automatically cancelled if there are insufficient funds at settlement. A preorder using a card or PayPal can also be cancelled automatically if the shortfall top-up fails, including when the card is expired or over its limit. After an error, check whether the preorder is still active and resolve the payment issue before relying on the reservation. See Nintendo eShop preorder payment and cancellation information.

Keep the exact error code and contact Nintendo Support and the issuer of the payment method. Nintendo’s published guidance describes supported routes and common account, region, balance, and family-control constraints, but it does not establish the issuer-side reason for an individual decline or a universal remedy for every code. Do not assume that changing a bank setting, retrying repeatedly, or switching devices will solve a failure without guidance for that specific error.
