The most useful PoE 2 tip is to check when advice was written and which patch and league it assumes. Path of Exile 2 has changed its campaign, passive tree, support gems, and league context across updates; an old guide can therefore send you down an outdated route even if it once was accurate. Before copying a build or walkthrough, compare its version and assumptions with the game you are playing.
Start by checking the patch and league
Grinding Gear Games’ official patch-notes index lists version 0.5.5, Forbidden Rites, dated September 3, 2026. Check the index and the update notes before relying on detailed advice about skills, passives, progression, or league mechanics: official Path of Exile 2 patch notes.

Patch number alone is not enough. A guide may also assume a particular league or character. Version 0.5.5 describes Forbidden Rites as a fresh-economy league while noting that older Early Access characters and the Runes of Aldur league continue to exist. A fresh economy does not mean existing characters have been erased. Confirm which character and league the guide is discussing before applying its progression or economy advice. See the 0.5.5 update notes and the Third Edict FAQ.
Avoid campaign advice built for the old structure
The campaign changed substantially in version 0.3.0. Grinding Gear Games added Act Four after Act Three, with eight islands that can be visited in any order; it also removed Cruel Difficulty and introduced three interludes leading to level 65, where endgame began in the progression described by those notes. The update states, “The Third Edict also marks the removal of Cruel Difficulty.” These are version-specific details, but they make older act-by-act walkthroughs especially worth checking before you follow them.
#1 Best Overall
Look for guides that identify the game version and campaign route they cover. If a walkthrough still directs you through Cruel Difficulty or omits the Act Four and interlude structure, it is describing an older progression model, not necessarily the one in your game. Read the official 0.3.0 notes for the changes.
Do not copy an old passive tree or gem setup blindly
Build recommendations are among the easiest advice to outgrow. The 0.3.0 update substantially overhauled support gems, and the 0.4.0 update added more than 20 skills, more than 35 supports, and more than 250 passive skills on the Druid side of the tree. Those are additions reported for that update, not current totals for the game. The 0.4.0 notes also warn that tree changes could require affected characters to refund passives.
Before following a build, check its publication or update date, then compare its skill, support gems, and passive route against the current in-game options. If the guide does not identify its patch, treat it as a starting point for investigation rather than a reliable set of instructions. Official details are in the 0.4.0 update notes and 0.3.0 update notes.

When two guides disagree, compare their assumptions rather than choosing the more confident-sounding one. These checks help reveal whether they actually apply to your character and game version:
- Patch and date: Does the guide name a version, and does it predate a major update?
- League and character: Is it for the same league and character context you are using?
- Skills and supports: Do the recommended skills and support gems match the current game?
- Passive route: Does the proposed tree path match the current tree, including any changes that may affect refunds?
- Campaign route: Does the walkthrough reflect the current acts and progression rather than an older difficulty structure?
If those assumptions are missing, do not treat the guide as current merely because its build name or headline looks familiar.
Be cautious with universal defense and quest-reward rules
A precise defensive priority or campaign quest-reward checklist should be tied to current, build-aware guidance. The official update material cited here does not establish a universal defense-stat order or a current quest-reward priority list. Avoid treating an unsourced “always choose” rule as a game-wide answer; check advice against the current patch and the needs of your specific build.
