In Grow a Garden, the Tanuki pet is listed as a Legendary pet hatched from a Zen Egg, with a 20.82% listed hatch chance. Whether Zen Eggs are available right now is unclear, so check current in-game shops and event rewards before planning to get one. The Tanuki pet is different from the Tanuki NPC, who exchanges Tranquil crops for Chi.
How to get the Tanuki pet
-
Check the current in-game shops and event rewards for a Zen Egg. Historical references describe event-related ways to obtain eggs, including Zen Tree stages and Corrupt Zen Quests, but they do not establish that those routes are available now.

If you obtain a Zen Egg, hatch it. Community game references list Tanuki as one possible hatch, with a 20.82% chance.
The 20.82% figure is a listed chance, not a guarantee or a promised number of eggs. No cited reference establishes a guaranteed hatch threshold or a reliable egg count for an individual player. The odds are reported by community-maintained game references, rather than current official documentation: Grow a Garden Wiki (Fandom) and Grow a Garden Calculator.

Are Zen Eggs available now?
Current availability is unverified. References conflict: one describes Tanuki as obtainable, another calls the Zen Egg limited, and a separate reference mentions a later reintroduction. The calculator’s availability snapshot is dated August 1, 2026; that does not confirm the egg is available in-game on October 4, 2026. Treat the Zen Egg as the listed route, not a guaranteed current opportunity, and verify live shop or event listings before spending time on a specific method.

The pet
The Tanuki pet is listed as Legendary, with a Mischief passive described as causing random actions in your garden. The pet reference labels it non-exclusive, but that does not confirm a Zen Egg is currently obtainable. See the Tanuki pet reference for the listed details.

The NPC
Tanuki is also the name of a Zen Event vendor. That NPC exchanged Tranquil crops for Chi, which could be used in the event shop; this is a separate role and does not directly give you the Tanuki pet. The historical event guide describes the vendor’s function, and the NPC page records the lines “Give me Tranquil plants” and “And I’ll channel Chi”: Zen Event guide and Tanuki NPC reference.
