There is no universal winner: choose based on the games you play and the features you need for them. Steam is the stronger default if Steam Cloud support in your games, Steam’s library tools, or the Steam Deck matter to you. Epic Games Store can be the better fit when a game you want is available there, its current promotion suits you, or you already use Epic. Check each game’s listing before buying; a store’s advertised features do not guarantee that every game supports them.
Compare the games you actually want first
A launcher is only as useful as the games and features you need from it. Availability can differ by storefront, and support for cloud saves, languages, and other features may differ by game. Epic says language support varies by title, while Valve says developers decide whether their games use Steam Cloud. Review the individual game page and developer information rather than assuming a feature applies across an entire catalog. See the Epic Games Store FAQs and Steam Cloud support information.

Cloud saves depend on the game
Steam Cloud is useful if you want supported saves and other user-specific data to sync between computers, but it is not an automatic promise for every Steam game. Check the game’s store page and developer information before relying on a save being available on another device. Household sharing and refunds need title-level checks
Sharing
Epic Support says it does not offer a family-sharing feature for sharing games in an Epic library with other Epic accounts. That does not establish that every Steam game can be shared: check Steam’s current sharing terms and any restrictions that apply to the specific titles you own. Refunds
Epic’s refund policy distinguishes purchases made through Epic checkout from transactions handled by a third party. For a purchase through a third-party checkout, the point-of-purchase policy applies. Review the current Epic Games Store refund policy for the exact item and purchase route before buying. Refund eligibility depends on the applicable terms; the sources here do not support naming either storefront as the more generous option.
Promotions and developer revenue terms are not price guarantees
Epic advertises store-wide promotions, multiple payment methods, regional currencies, wishlists, achievements, and its Support-A-Creator network on its distribution page. These are Epic’s descriptions of its offerings, not an independent comparison of every feature or a guarantee of a lower price in your region. Compare the live price and terms for the game you intend to buy.

Epic also describes a developer revenue arrangement of 100% of net revenue on the first $1 million per product per year, followed by its standard 88%/12% model. This is a developer-side term, not evidence that a game will cost consumers less on Epic. A developer’s retail pricing decision must be assessed separately. A simple way to decide
- List the games you want. Check which storefronts offer each one and confirm operating-system, language, and other relevant feature details on the specific game pages.
- Check the features you rely on. If you need saves to sync, verify Steam Cloud support or the game’s alternative. If you need household sharing, inspect the exact title’s rules and the platform’s current terms.
- Compare the purchase in front of you. Check current regional prices, promotions, payment route, and refund eligibility for the specific item.
- Account for how you play. If handheld Steam play matters, consider Steam Deck and verify each game’s compatibility before relying on it.
