First, choose which DMZ you mean. The original Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta is available to download now, including as a standalone download for players who do not own Modern Warfare II. A separate DMZ experience for Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026; it is not the same mode and is not yet playable. Here’s how to access the original and what to expect from the upcoming version.
How do I get started with DMZ mode in Call of Duty?
If you want to play now, look for the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta in your platform’s store or access it through an existing Modern Warfare II installation. Activision Support says the Beta can be installed without owning Modern Warfare II. If you are interested in the new DMZ, plan for Modern Warfare 4, whose launch is scheduled for October 23, 2026.
The modes share an extraction-shooter premise, but their setting, progression, and access are distinct. Use the table to identify the right starting point.

How to download the original DMZ Beta
Activision Support gives installation directions for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox consoles, Battle.net, Steam, and the Microsoft Store on PC. Storefront layouts and product packaging can change, so use the current platform store listing and Activision’s installation and setup instructions rather than relying on an old button-by-button walkthrough.

If you own Modern Warfare II
Activision says DMZ Beta is included in the Modern Warfare II installation. Use the game’s file-management options to access or install the mode’s content, following the current support steps for your platform.
If you do not own Modern Warfare II
Search your platform’s store for DMZ Beta and install the standalone download. Activision says ownership of Modern Warfare II is not required to download the free-to-play Beta.

What to do in the original DMZ
The original DMZ is an open-world, narrative-focused extraction mode. Its basic loop is to choose an objective, deploy, make progress while managing the risk of staying longer, and reach an exfiltration point to leave. The official 2022 overview describes faction missions and side objectives alongside valuable loot, possible encounters with AI combatants or enemy Operators, and extraction.
- Choose a goal. Faction missions and side objectives give you something to pursue during a deployment.
- Explore and decide what risk to take. Searching for valuable items or continuing an objective may bring combat with AI or other Operators.
- Extract. Get to an exfiltration point to leave the map with the results of your run.
This is a broad orientation based on Activision’s launch-era description, not a promise about current balance, mission availability, or lobby behavior.

What to expect from the new Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
The upcoming mode is set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone and is designed for solo or squad deployments. Activision’s pre-release descriptions outline several ways to approach a run, including Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, side operations, free exploration, and player-driven encounters. Weather and objectives can shift as hostile forces and conditions change.
Operators and persistent progression
According to the official DMZ deep dive, players will be able to create multiple Operators in the FOB’s Active Duty menu. Each is described as having a backpack and loadout that persist across deployments, as well as customizable traits. DMZ experience is also described as upgrading the FOB, unlocking stations, and ranking up Operators. These are pre-release feature descriptions, not verified final launch behavior.

Activision has not established final menu-by-menu onboarding in the published material, so exact first-session steps for this version should wait until the game’s live screens are available. No. The original is the Modern Warfare II-era Beta, with access through that game’s installation or a standalone store download. The new DMZ is a separate experience launching with Modern Warfare 4, set in Hajin and described with its own missions and persistent Operator progression. Joe Cecot, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director, described the new mode to Xbox Wire as “an action extraction shooter.”
