First, confirm how the particular game handles multiplayer: friends might share a hosted farm, visit one another’s spaces, or meet in an online world. Those modes are not interchangeable, and Steam availability alone does not guarantee cross-platform play. For a straightforward host-led example, Stardew Valley supports co-op for up to four players; Palia’s Steam listing describes online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer.
Choose a game whose multiplayer matches your group
Before arranging a session, check what players actually do together, whether someone must host, how many people can join, and whether your platforms are compatible. Also look for account and internet requirements. A game’s “multiplayer” label does not by itself answer these questions.

Host or join a Stardew Valley co-op farm
Stardew Valley is a useful example of a shared farm with a player host. The official multiplayer explainer gives a maximum of four players. The host’s game has to be running while the group plays.
- Open Co-op. At the title screen, choose Co-op. The host can start a new co-op farm or host an existing farm; a joining player selects the hosted farm or enters an invite code when one is available. See the official Stardew Valley multiplayer instructions.
- Provide a cabin for each joining friend. When creating a co-op farm, cabins can be selected in advance. To add them to an existing farm, ask Robin to build them. The host should make sure there is one cabin for every friend joining. Details are in the official instructions and the multiplayer wiki.
- Join through Steam if the farm is not listed. On Steam for PC, a friend’s hosted farm may appear on the Co-op join screen. If it does not, the wiki suggests trying a Steam invite from the in-game options menu. Stardew Valley Wiki multiplayer guidance.
- Keep the host in the game. This is a host-led session, not a persistent farm that friends can enter while the host is away. The official explainer says the host must be in-game whenever the group wants to play. Official multiplayer explainer.
- Agree on how to manage shared resources. In the original official explainer, the farm and world state are shared, while players keep private inventories and individual skills, relationships, quests, and recipes. New saves can configure whether players share a wallet, according to the wiki.
Check cross-platform support before scheduling
Do not assume a Steam player can join a friend on console—or that every PC version can join every other version. The Stardew Valley Wiki says multiplayer across platforms is unsupported, with an exception among some PC versions, including Windows and macOS. Compatibility is game- and version-specific, so confirm the exact combination your group plans to use.

Palia is a contrasting example: its Steam store listing explicitly identifies Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. The listing also says a Palia account and broadband internet are required. Check the current listing and the platforms your friends use rather than treating cross-platform support as universal across games.

Shared co-op progression and social visits offer different kinds of sessions. In Stardew Valley, friends join a host’s farm, with cabins and a host who stays in-game. Gameloft’s Disney Dreamlight Valley support page describes players on all platforms visiting one another’s Valleys through Valley Visits and participating in DreamSnaps together, as of the August 21, 2024 Dapper Delights update. That description establishes those social features; it does not establish unrestricted shared-world co-op progression.
