Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart with the game’s own system requirements, then make one reversible change at a time. Low frame rates, brief stutters, and long loading times can have different causes, so first identify which problem you are trying to fix. There is no universal graphics preset for every open-world RPG or every low-end PC.
1. Check the game’s requirements and close unnecessary programs
Look up the minimum requirements for the exact game and compare them with your PC’s CPU, graphics card, and memory. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition performance guidance and Starfield PC troubleshooting guidance both begin with checking requirements. If your system falls below them, lower settings may help, but they cannot guarantee acceptable performance.
Close programs you do not need while playing. This is a low-risk first check, particularly if other applications are using system resources.
2. Update the graphics driver from the right source
Get the current graphics driver from the manufacturer of your GPU. Bethesda’s Skyrim guidance and Fallout 76 PC troubleshooting page direct players to the graphics-card maker; for a laptop, check the laptop manufacturer’s driver support as well. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.

3. Make sure the game uses the intended GPU
Some laptops have both integrated graphics and a separate, more powerful GPU. Check the per-game GPU selection in your graphics-driver settings and select the intended GPU if the game is assigned to integrated graphics. The exact menu names vary by driver and Windows version.
Plug the laptop into power while gaming. Bethesda notes that power-saving behavior can switch a laptop to integrated graphics, so a battery-saving profile may affect performance even when a discrete GPU is present.

4. Lower demanding settings gradually
Change one setting at a time, then test in the same area of the game. Bethesda’s recommendations illustrate how options vary by game: its Skyrim guidance names godrays, shadows, decals, screen-space reflections, SSAO, snow shader, lens flare, view distance, distant-object detail, fade, resolution, and antialiasing. Its Fallout 76 guidance highlights actor, item, object, and grass fade, as well as texture, water, lighting, and shadow quality. These are examples for those games, not settings every RPG will have.
Prioritize options that affect visual effects, shadows, or how far the game draws objects, if your game offers them. Keep a note of each original value so you can undo a change if the image becomes distracting or performance does not improve.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
5. Balance resolution and image quality
Reducing resolution means the game renders fewer pixels, which may help performance but can make the image look softer. Bethesda specifically suggests trying a lower resolution for Skyrim. Lower view distance or shadow quality can also change what you see, so keep a setting only if the performance benefit is worth its visual cost.
6. Troubleshoot overlays and game files
For Starfield, Bethesda suggests disabling the Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar when performance problems occur and verifying the game files. Treat these as troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed FPS fixes:

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Disable the Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar for the game, then relaunch and test the same scene.
- Use the game launcher’s file-verification option to check for damaged or missing files.
- If the issue remains, restore any overlay you rely on and continue testing other possible causes.
7. Separate low FPS from stutter and long loading
Record which symptom you experience; they are not interchangeable. Bethesda’s Skyrim support guidance groups poor framerate, long load times, and stuttering among possible issues. FPS describes how smoothly the game renders during play, while a long loading screen is a separate delay. Brief stutters may also feel different from consistently low frame rates.
When comparing settings, return to the same area or scene and assess the following separately:

- Next-Gen Intel Arc Graphics: Powered by Intel Arc A580 GPU with Intel Xe HPG microarchitecture, featuring 384 XMX engines for enhanced AI acceleration and content creation.
- High-Performance Memory: 8GB GDDR6 on a 256-bit interface running at 16 Gbps, delivering excellent bandwidth for 1440p gaming and creative workloads.
- Factory Overclocked: Engine clock set at 2000 MHz out of the box, providing optimized performance for smooth gameplay and multimedia tasks.
- Advanced Dual-Fan Cooling: Features a dual-fan design with striped axial fans and an ultra-fit heatpipe for efficient thermal management. 0dB Silent Cooling stops fans completely at low temperatures for silent operation.
- Durable Construction: Includes a stylish metal backplate for enhanced PCB rigidity and a premium aesthetic, backed by ASRock's Super Alloy components for long-term reliability.
- Average FPS and whether it remains consistent or has brief stutters.
- Image quality and visibility after changing resolution, distance, or effects.
- Loading time, recorded separately from in-game frame rate.
- Whether you can identify a CPU or GPU limit using the indicators available on your system.
- Whether the change is easy to reverse and applies to this game rather than being a universal fix.
This is a practical way to compare your own configurations, not a measured ranking of settings. Bethesda’s support pages do not publish controlled benchmarks showing a general FPS gain for these changes, so no particular percentage improvement or frame-rate target can be promised.
8. Follow game-specific storage advice
For Starfield, Bethesda says the game should be installed on an SSD rather than an HDD. That is game-specific installation guidance; it does not establish that buying an SSD increases frame rate in every open-world RPG.
9. Gather details before escalating
If the problem persists, note the game and version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage device, resolution, graphics settings, and whether the main problem is low average FPS, brief stutters, or long loading times. Bethesda recommends contacting support with a DxDiag file for unresolved Skyrim issues. These details help distinguish a settings problem from a system that does not meet the game’s requirements.
