How to Tell Whether a SteamVR Game Is Actually Coming Soon

Steam’s “Coming soon” label does not promise an imminent launch. Here’s how to check the Release Date field, understand broad windows, and weigh developer estimates.

On Steam, “Coming soon” is a store-page status—not a promise that a game will launch shortly. For the clearest timing signal, check the game’s structured Release Date field: a calendar day is specific, while a month, quarter, or year is only a broad window. “Coming soon” and “To be announced” do not give a launch date.

Check the Steam release-date field first

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and find Release Date. Read the wording on the live page; don’t rely on a search-result snippet or an older article. Steam’s VR-filtered Coming Soon listings use several kinds of date wording, including exact dates, months, quarters, years, and “Coming soon.”

  2. Confirm that the listing is relevant to VR. Steam uses VR Only and VR Supported designations. Check the game’s VR requirements separately if headset or platform compatibility matters; a VR label does not indicate when the game will launch.

  3. Record the release wording and its source. Treat the structured Steam field separately from any timing estimate written by the developer in the page description.

What each release label tells you

Steam listing wording What it establishes What it does not establish
Specific calendar date The listing currently announces that day. It is the most precise public timing signal. That the date cannot change. Recheck the live page for updates.
Month, quarter, or year A broad announced release window. A particular launch day.
Coming soon The product has a Coming Soon listing. That release is imminent, or any specific release date.
To be announced The Release Date field currently supplies no date. A launch window. Any separate season or year statement is a developer estimate, not a date in that field.

Why “Coming soon” can last a while

Valve’s Steamworks Coming Soon documentation says, “You can put up a Coming Soon page for your product well in advance of your release date.” It also requires new products to have a Coming Soon page up for at least two weeks before release. That minimum is a platform rule, not a countdown: a Coming Soon page can appear well before the release window.

Valve describes the page as a way for developers to build an audience and give customers a place to learn about a game and add it to a wishlist. Wishlisting can help you keep track of a game, but it does not make an unspecified date firm.

Keep developer estimates separate from Steam’s date

A developer may add useful context in the store-page description even when the Release Date field is vague. Preserve both the wording and the attribution: describe it as the developer’s estimate, not as a confirmed Steam release date.

  • Haymaker is marked “Coming soon” and “VR Only.” The page also has a “Coming Soon To Early Access” section. Neither label supplies a specific launch day; Early Access is a separate development and release context.

  • Spectrum VR is marked “Coming soon,” while its description says, “The release is planned in the winter.” That is a broad estimate, and without a year it does not identify a particular winter.

  • VRKraft has “To be announced” in its Release Date field and a “Coming Soon To Early Access” section. Its developer says the full release “should be available by the end of next year.” That expectation is not a specific Steam release date.

Use a wishlist as a notification, not a forecast

Steam allows customers to wishlist Coming Soon products. According to Valve’s Steamworks guidance, Steam emails wishlisters when the release date is reached and the developer presses the release button. That notification can tell you when the game becomes available; it does not tell you when that will happen if the listing has no definite date.

If the timing is vague, wishlist the game if you want the notification, then revisit its Steam page or the developer’s official announcements for changes. When reporting or comparing listings, distinguish the precision of the date, whether it comes from Steam’s field or developer-written text, the game’s VR support designation, and any conditions attached to the estimate.
