A report that Chaperone stops appearing while streaming on Steam Frame has not been independently verified in the available sources. There is also no verified information here confirming that Valve asked the reporter for reproduction steps. Without the original post, software version, streaming mode and steps to reproduce, the cause and status of the issue remain unknown.

What Chaperone does on Steam Frame

Chaperone is SteamVR’s play-area boundary system. It provides visual boundaries intended to help a VR user stay within the configured play area. Valve describes Steam Frame as “a standalone virtual reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone experiences for both VR and Non-VR.” Valve’s Steamworks documentation makes clear that PC streaming is central to the device, alongside standalone use.

A September 30, 2026 independent analysis of Steam Frame’s chaperone-related configuration file discusses how the headset stores boundary and standing data. Its author characterizes the work as ongoing and some observations as speculative, so it is exploratory context rather than definitive technical documentation. Read the analysis.

What is—and is not—confirmed about the reported symptom

The available material does not establish that Chaperone disappears during streaming, identify which software versions or streaming modes might be involved, or confirm a response from Valve. It therefore cannot show whether the behavior is a reproducible defect, a configuration issue, or a misunderstanding of how boundaries are displayed in a particular setup.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

To assess the claim, the original report would need to establish the Steam Frame and SteamVR software versions, whether streaming is through Steam Link or another mode, what the user sees before and after the boundary disappears, and exact steps to reproduce it. Any Valve reply would also need to be available in the original report or another attributable source.

OVR Advanced Settings and floor adjustment

An OVR Advanced Settings announcement describes Frame support via streaming and an issue involving floor setting that may be addressed by adjusting the floor through Chaperone. It does not identify that floor issue as the cause of disappearing boundaries or offer a confirmed fix for this reported symptom.

SteamVR release notes

SteamVR release notes mention improved integration between camera-equipped headsets and Chaperone, as well as improved Steam Link streaming recovery on Linux. These are general changes; they do not explain the reported symptom or establish that it has been fixed.

A separate factory-reset report

A Steam Community post describes different symptoms—streaming status and wireless-adapter settings disappearing after an update—and says its author resolved those issues with a factory reset. That post is not evidence that a factory reset fixes Chaperone disappearing, so it should not be treated as a remedy for this report.
