Buy only if the game’s current, playable version matches the kind of RPG you want, works on your system, and feels worth its price without relying on promised future updates.
Start with the experience you actually want
Before comparing discounts, decide what you want to play. Check the screenshots, trailer, and store description for the game’s combat, exploration, story emphasis, and character or party systems. If the store page makes them clear, consider the expected length and what you would do after finishing the main story.

Then ask whether that experience is worth the price to you. A steep discount cannot turn an unwanted genre, combat style, or limited feature set into a bargain.
Check the game’s Steam page for practical fit
Read the individual game’s store page rather than assuming that features common in one RPG apply to another. Verify its supported operating systems and minimum system requirements, available languages, online features, and controller support if those matter to you. Check whether DLC or in-game purchases add costs or content you consider essential.

Use recent reviews to investigate the current build
Read recent reviews and look for recurring, specific reports about performance, bugs, balance, story, and whether the game currently resembles what its page advertises. Steam also provides community hubs, where players discuss the game and developers may post announcements. Treat this material as evidence to weigh, not a promise that your experience will match a reviewer’s: individual reviews do not necessarily represent every buyer.
For Early Access, value what you can play now
Early Access changes the purchase question: assess the build that is available today, not the game you hope it may become. Valve’s Early Access guidance says to consider what a game is like to play right now and notes that some teams may be unable to finish their games.

Read the developer’s announcements and stated plans, but do not count unshipped features or an eventual full release as guaranteed value. Valve also notes that an individual game’s price may change over time. Decide whether the current build merits its current price on its own.
Know what Steam’s refund window does—and does not—cover
For games bought on Steam, the standard refund conditions are to request a refund within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. Valve says requests outside these conditions can still be reviewed, and some jurisdictions may provide additional rights. Early Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Check the Steam refund policy when buying, since policy terms can change.

If you buy a third-party key, Valve cannot refund that purchase through Steam. The seller’s own refund terms are separate, so check them before paying.

- Current playable content: What can you play now, and is that enough for the price?
- Genre and mechanics: Do the combat, exploration, story, and character systems suit your preferences?
- Technical fit: Does the game support your system, language, and preferred input method?
- Recent player reports: Do current reviews show recurring issues that matter to you?
- Development risk: If it is in Early Access, would you still be satisfied if planned content never arrives?
- Total cost: Include any DLC or add-ons you need for the experience you want.
There is no single fair price or discount threshold for an unnamed RPG: the right comparison depends on the specific game, its current build, and what you value in an RPG.
