On Steam, “Coming Soon” means the developer has chosen not to display a more specific release date to customers. It is a pre-release store page: you can view the game and wishlist it, but you cannot buy or play it from that page yet. The label does not promise a launch date or special placement in Steam’s recommendations.
What “Coming Soon” means on a Steam page
Steamworks separates a game’s intended release date from the date information shown publicly. Developers set an intended exact date in Steamworks, then choose how much customers can see: an exact date, a month and year, a quarter, a year, or no date. The no-date display is “Coming Soon.” So the label does not prove that the developer has no planned date in Steamworks; it means Steam is not showing customers one.
Once Valve has approved the store page and the developer publishes it as Coming Soon, customers can see the page and Community Hub and add the game to a wishlist. Steam’s Coming Soon and Release Options documentation state that customers cannot purchase or play the game from the page at this stage.
What the label does not tell you
- A specific launch date: “Coming Soon” is the no-date display option. Check the rest of the page for any date or timeframe the developer has chosen to show.
- Whether the game is ready or available: The page is pre-release, not a way to access the game early.
- How certain the schedule is: The label is a storefront display, not a promise that the game will launch by a particular date. Steam notes that release plans can change and developers control their release timing.
- Guaranteed promotion: Steam says wishlist counts generally are not an algorithmic visibility factor, although there are exceptions such as the Popular Upcoming list. See Visibility on Steam.
Steam’s timing rules and upcoming-list placement
Steam requires a new product’s Coming Soon page to be live for at least two weeks before release. If a live page’s release date is within 14 days, Steam says the developer cannot change it without contacting Steam. These are Steamworks policy rules, not estimates of how long a particular game will remain Coming Soon. Details are in Coming Soon.

For upcoming-list ordering, Steam treats a month-only date as though it were the last day of that month, and a quarter as though it were the last day of that quarter. A game with no displayed date appears behind entries with more specific dates. This ordering does not predict when the game will actually launch. Steam explains this in Release Dates.
Steamworks says store-presence review typically takes 3–5 business days and recommends submitting a page at least 7 business days before the developer wants it to go live. Those are developer-facing review estimates and recommendations, not a countdown for customers waiting on a game’s release; see Release Process.

Should you wishlist a Coming Soon game?
Wishlisting is the practical way to keep track of a public Steam page. Steam says users who have a game on their wishlist when it releases in Early Access or full release will receive an email and/or mobile push notification. Delivery depends on Steam’s notification rules and the user’s settings; Steam also applies cooldowns and other conditions. A wishlist is not a purchase commitment and does not guarantee a particular release date. See Wishlists.
