To find out whether a new Unholy Death Knight build is actually weaker after a nerf, compare it with the old build under the same conditions—and record the exact game version for both tests. Separate sustained single-target damage from burst and multi-target performance, then inspect combat logs for expected casts and damage sources. A single damage number, forum report, or simulation result cannot tell you whether the build changed, the test changed, or a hotfix altered the game.
Record the version and test conditions first
Before interpreting a result, note when and where you tested and which live game build and hotfix it used. Unholy tuning can change through hotfixes, and Blizzard may both adjust damage and fix ability interactions. A before-and-after comparison across different versions is not a clean test of two builds.
- Date and region
- Live game build and known hotfix date
- Character gear and item level
- Talents and hero talents
- Consumables and external buffs
- Target type, target count, and encounter or dummy
- Test duration and opening sequence
These controls are a practical testing method, not a Blizzard-issued standard. If you cannot match a condition, record the difference rather than treating the attempts as directly comparable.
Choose the damage question you want to answer
Decide whether you are testing sustained single target, a planned burst window, cleave, or broader AoE. These are different questions: a build can perform differently across them, and an overall total can conceal when damage was dealt.

Sustained single target
Use a repeatable single-target test to compare sustained output. Keep the target, duration, opener, gear, talents, consumables, and external buffs consistent. A target dummy can make repetitions easier to control, but it is not a substitute for every encounter condition.
Burst windows
Track the burst window separately from the full test. Blizzard’s March 2026 tuning notes described some adjustments as improving damage outside burst windows, illustrating why one combined figure may obscure a change in damage timing. Those notes are historical context, not current tuning guidance.

Multi-target and encounter-specific damage
If you play content with multiple targets, choose a repeatable target count and timing that resemble the relevant dungeon or raid situation. Do not treat a PvP dummy test as a PvE result, or assume one target setup answers every AoE question. A player forum discussion from April 2026 explicitly described testing on PvP target dummies; it is an example of a test context, not proof of a general damage change (Blizzard forums).
Run a controlled old-build versus new-build comparison
- Define the scenario. Choose the target type, target count, duration, and damage window before you begin.
- Match the setup. Use the same equipment, consumables, buffs, talents where applicable, and test environment. If the new build requires different talents, change only what is necessary to represent that build.
- Repeat the same opening. Keep the opener and test duration consistent so a different start does not masquerade as a build difference.
- Repeat attempts. Compare repeated runs rather than relying on one result. Keep any materially different attempt out of the direct comparison or label it clearly.
- Record separate outcomes. Note sustained output, burst-window output, and relevant multi-target behavior as distinct observations.
There is no generally applicable current DPS benchmark established here. Your useful comparison is between equivalent attempts on the same character and version, not an unsupported target number.

Use combat logs to investigate suspicious results
If damage looks unexpectedly low, inspect the combat log before concluding that something is broken. Check whether the casts and damage sources you expect from the build appear, and compare their presence and relative contribution across equivalent attempts. A missing or changed event is a clue to investigate, not by itself proof of a bug.
Player discussions have raised suspicions about post-patch ability behavior and mentioned log review, but those reports are anecdotal. Confirm a suspected interaction against current official notes or reliable technical testing before treating it as a verified issue. Warcraft Logs is one service players use to review combat events (Warcraft Logs).

Use SimulationCraft as a baseline, not a universal verdict
A simulation is useful only if its character, talents, game build, and fight style match the question you are asking. The SimulationCraft report result available for this comparison identified World of Warcraft build 12.1.0.69933 Live, a hotfix date of 2026-10-03, and a Patchwerk fight style. The report page could not be opened in full, so verify the current report and your client version before relying on its details (SimulationCraft reports).
Patchwerk is a controlled single-target model, not a stand-in for every real fight. Use it to help establish a comparable baseline, then test the burst or multi-target pattern that matters in your content.

Why the patch date matters
Blizzard’s March 18, 2026 post said Unholy performance had dropped further than intended and announced adjustments and bug fixes. Its final notes included broad damage increases for Unholy and minions and fixes involving Necrotic Coil, Sudden Doom, Plague Mastery, Scourge Strike’s Virulent Plague spread, and Putrefy targeting. Those are examples of a historical tuning event, not a recommendation for a current build or a statement of present-day tuning (Blizzard’s World of Warcraft news and updates).
As Blizzard community representative Kaivax put it on March 18, 2026: “With yesterday’s tuning pass, it’s clear that Unholy performance dropped further than intended.” The remark explains that specific adjustment round; it does not establish how a build performs after later changes.
Interpret the result without overclaiming
- Different versions: If a hotfix landed between attempts, the version changed along with the build. Retest both builds on the current version if possible.
- Different setup: If gear, buffs, target count, duration, or opener differed, note the mismatch and avoid calling the result a direct build comparison.
- Different damage pattern: A single-target sustained result does not answer a burst or AoE question. Run the test that matches your content.
- Unexpected log events: Check whether expected casts and damage sources occurred, then seek current confirmation before claiming a bug.
- Simulation mismatch: A Patchwerk result may help with controlled single target, but it does not resolve performance in a different encounter pattern.
When Blizzard changes tuning or fixes an interaction, repeat the comparison on the updated live build: the earlier result no longer isolates current performance.
