Xbox first said players would be able to buy games through its Android app starting in November 2024. Xbox’s later updates place the feature’s arrival in April 2025: the app supports game and add-on purchases, Game Pass sign-ups, and Perks redemption. Buying a console game in the app does not mean installing and running it natively on an Android phone.
Can you buy Xbox games through the Android app?
Yes. Xbox’s April 16, 2025 update said in-app purchases were beginning to roll out to beta users on Android and iOS, with wider availability to follow. In a December 16, 2025 update, Xbox said buying games and subscribing to Game Pass through the mobile app had been added in April. The Google Play listing, shown as updated September 14, 2026, also describes buying games without leaving the app. Store listings and feature availability can change over time.
Xbox described a Buy button on game-detail pages for users with a saved payment method. Its April announcement also covered add-on content, Game Pass sign-ups, and Perks redemption. The purchase examples in that announcement—including Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and MLB The Show 25—were illustrations at the time, not a guarantee of what is currently available to buy.
Why did Xbox say “starting in November”?
On October 11, 2024, Xbox president Sarah Bond announced that players would be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Android app “starting in November.” That was an announced target, not confirmation that the feature launched that month. Xbox’s April 2025 announcement and December confirmation instead document the rollout and addition of purchases in April 2025.

The October announcement came amid a legal dispute involving Google’s mobile store, but the available statements do not establish that a particular court action caused the difference between the announced target and the later rollout. The supported timeline is:

Does buying an Xbox game in the app install it on Android?
No such native Android installation is described in Xbox’s announcement or the Google Play listing. The feature is for buying Xbox games and add-ons through the mobile app; it should not be confused with downloading and running a console version as an Android game.

Xbox’s April announcement gave pre-installing a preorder on an Xbox console from the app as an example. That is a console-related action, not evidence that the game installs locally on the phone.
Is buying a game different from Remote Play or Game Pass?
Remote Play
Remote Play is separate from purchasing. Xbox said Remote Play would no longer be available directly through the Xbox app on mobile and would remain accessible through mobile browsers. A game purchase in the app is not itself a streaming feature or proof that a title can be played remotely.

Game Pass
The app also lets users join or subscribe to Game Pass, which is distinct from buying an individual game. A subscription does not mean the subscriber owns every title in the Game Pass catalog; access is tied to the subscription and its catalog terms.

Xbox’s announcements identify Android and iOS and describe a staged rollout, but they do not provide a complete country-by-country availability list, account restrictions, or a list of every game eligible for purchase. The Google Play listing supports the existence of Android in-app buying, not universal availability or eligibility for every title. Check the app’s game page and available purchase options for your account and region.
