In March 2019, reports said Apex Legends was issuing permanent hardware bans to PC cheaters, but the available coverage did not include direct confirmation from Respawn. A separate, better-sourced figure was that Respawn had banned more than 355,000 PC players by March 8, 2019—a number that does not establish that hardware bans were used.
What the 2019 hardware-ban report claimed
HotHardware published its report on March 18, 2019, describing permanent hardware bans as something Apex Legends was “reportedly” issuing to PC cheaters. The story traced the claim to Reddit posts featuring alleged screenshots from cheating forums, rather than to an on-record Respawn announcement. HotHardware’s report recounts an alleged player’s attempt to return after a ban, but that anecdote does not independently verify Respawn’s enforcement method.
Digital Trends also characterized permanent hardware bans as reported in a May 5, 2019 article, pointing to Reddit and forum material. That corroborates how the claim circulated at the time; it does not supply official confirmation. Digital Trends’ coverage should not be read as proof of a current policy.
What Respawn had confirmed about PC bans
GameSpot reported on March 12, 2019 that Respawn had confirmed more than 355,000 PC players were banned as of March 8, 2019. This was a historical, PC-specific total. It confirms a substantial anti-cheat enforcement effort, not the use of hardware-level bans. GameSpot’s report also said the PC version used Easy Anti-Cheat.

Respawn described anti-cheat as ongoing work that required vigilance and adaptation. In GameSpot’s account, the company said, “We’ll need to continue to adapt to and be very vigilant about fighting [cheaters]. We take cheating very seriously and care deeply about the health of Apex Legends for all players.” Respawn also said it would be “pretty secretive” about its plans because “Cheaters are crafty and we don’t want them to see us coming.” GameSpot did not identify an individual speaker for those comments.
How strong is the evidence for permanent hardware bans?
| Claim | Evidence reported at the time | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| More than 355,000 PC players banned by March 8, 2019 | GameSpot said Respawn confirmed the dated figure. | A historical PC ban count; it does not say how bans were enforced. |
| Permanent hardware bans for PC cheaters | HotHardware described the claim as reported and traced it to Reddit posts and alleged cheating-forum screenshots. | That the claim circulated; it is not direct Respawn confirmation of the method or permanence. |
The two claims should not be treated as equally verified. The ban count was attributed to a Respawn confirmation; the hardware-ban claim rested on user-posted material as relayed by news coverage.

What the report does not tell players today
These 2019 articles do not establish Apex Legends’ current enforcement policy, which hardware identifiers might be considered, how long a hardware ban would remain in effect, or what appeal route applies. They also do not establish a false-positive rate or a cross-platform policy. The old report is not a reliable guide to what happens to a player’s account or device now.
Nothing in the coverage supports trying to evade enforcement by changing a MAC address, reinstalling the operating system, or replacing a computer. The anecdotes and screenshots are not verified instructions or evidence that any such action works.
