Buy a VR game at launch when playing immediately matters to you and the evidence available already meets your personal bar. Wait when reviews could change your mind about performance, comfort, content, or whether the game suits your headset and play style. The decision turns on what you value now, what remains uncertain, and what recourse the store actually offers—not on a rule that every launch purchase is risky or every review is decisive.
Compare what buying now and waiting would mean for you
| Factor | Buy at launch | Wait for reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Immediacy | You can play as soon as it is available, which may matter if friends are playing or you want to avoid spoilers. | You trade some or all of that immediate access for time to learn more. |
| Uncertainty | You accept whatever is still unknown about performance, comfort, content, and compatibility. | You can look for hands-on findings about the questions that could affect your enjoyment. |
| Evidence | You decide using the information available before or at release. | You can judge reviews for relevance to your headset and play style, rather than relying on promotional material alone. |
| Refund options | Your safety net depends on the store, region, purchase type, and playtime. | Waiting lets you make a more informed choice, but refund terms still depend on the store where you buy. |
Identify the unknowns that could change your decision
Before launch, make a short list of what you need to know to feel comfortable spending the price. For a VR game, the most useful questions often concern whether it runs well on your headset, whether its comfort and locomotion options suit you, how much worthwhile content it offers, and whether it works with your platform or setup.
Then ask whether an answer to any of those questions could change your decision. If you would still buy the game either way, waiting for that answer may not help. If a poor answer would make you pass, seek a review that tested the point rather than treating any positive verdict as enough.
Judge reviews by what they actually test
A hands-on review of a final release build can offer more relevant evidence than a trailer, preview, or brief user impression, but no review can guarantee you will have the same experience. Check what hardware and version the reviewer used, whether they discuss the specific performance and comfort issues you care about, and whether their description of content matches what you want from the game.

Pay attention to when a review was published and whether it says the reviewer had access to the final release build. Review timing or an embargo date alone is not a reliable measure of review quality, and there is no universal rule that reviews appear before a game launches. Treat the review as evidence to weigh, not a substitute for your own priorities.
Know what the store means by “launch”
Store labels can describe different release situations. On Steam, Early Access means a game is still in development. Steam advises buying an Early Access game if you are excited to play it in its current state; its store page has an Early Access section with the developer’s plan.

Advance Access on Steam instead means an opportunity to play before a game’s official release. It is not the same as the Early Access development model. Check which label applies and what is actually included before treating an early playable date as a finished release.

Do not assume that a refund policy on one platform applies to another. Read the current terms for your store, region, purchase type, and playtime before buying; policies for Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2 can vary by region, and the terms should be checked directly with the relevant store.

For Steam, its refund policy says Early Access and Advance Access playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Steam’s Early Access guidance says these games qualify for refunds under its standard policy, with purchase date and playtime considered. A refund request is not guaranteed to be accepted.
Steam’s pre-order guidance says pre-orders can be refunded any time before release; after release, its standard 14-day and under-two-hours conditions apply. It also describes refunds before Advance Access begins for qualifying purchases. Review the live policy for the details that apply to your purchase rather than relying on a refund as a reason to buy without checking.

Make the call with a simple threshold
- List your deal-breakers. Choose the unresolved questions about performance, comfort, content, or compatibility that could make you regret the purchase.
- Look for evidence about those questions. Prefer specific hands-on findings over broad praise, and check whether the review reflects the final game and a relevant setup.
- Weigh the value of playing immediately. Playing with friends or avoiding spoilers may make launch access worthwhile; otherwise, the benefit of waiting may outweigh the delay.
- Verify the store terms. Check the current refund rules for the exact platform, region, purchase type, and playtime situation. On Steam, distinguish Early Access from Advance Access and inspect the developer plan if the game is still in development.
- Buy only if the remaining uncertainty is acceptable. If one unanswered question could change your choice, wait for evidence on that point. If the available information is already enough and immediate play matters, buying at launch can be a reasonable decision.
