Start with KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX, the first adventure. For the simplest way to get it and continue through the early series, use KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and follow the collection’s presented sequence. Two of its six listed experiences are cutscene compilations rather than playable-game remasters, so the collection is not six full games.
Start with KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX
KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX is the best first game for a newcomer. Square Enix describes its collection as a way to explore six entries “starting with the very first adventure,” and PlayStation’s product description calls HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX “the perfect opportunity to start” for people new to the franchise: PlayStation’s product page.

The collection is a convenient route, not a claim that every Kingdom Hearts work is included or that this is the series’ in-world chronological order. The suggested sequence below follows how the collection presents its contents.
A beginner route through HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX
- KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX — play this first.
- KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories — continue with the next presented entry.
- KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX — play the next full game.
- KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days — watch the HD cutscene compilation; it is not the original playable game.
- KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX — continue to the next full game.
- KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded — watch the HD cutscene compilation; it is not the original playable game.
Square Enix and PlayStation list these six experiences in the collection; Nintendo also lists the collection’s contents on its Nintendo product page. The distinction matters: the entries for 358/2 Days and Re:coded are story presentations, not full playable remasters.

Why not start with a later numbered game?
The supported recommendation is to begin with the first adventure rather than jumping into a later numbered entry. The collection is explicitly presented as a starting opportunity for newcomers, and its lineup begins with KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX. Following that order gives you the sequence the collection itself lays out without treating a chronological timeline as the default route.
This is a recommendation based on the official collection descriptions, not a universal play order published for every Kingdom Hearts game and related work. If your priority is a different route through the franchise, the collection pages alone do not establish a definitive alternative.

Which collection or platform should you choose?
For the purpose of starting with the first game, look for KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX. Square Enix lists digital options for Steam, Epic Games, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox, as well as physical editions on its Kingdom Hearts collection page. Choose a platform you already own, then verify the local store listing for availability and exact contents; the official information cited here does not establish a best-performing or cheapest platform.
Square Enix also lists KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III], which groups HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. The page schedules it for October 8, 2026, so it is not necessary to wait for that broader package just to begin the first game.
