Usually, a VR boundary does not stay visible all the time: SteamVR’s Chaperone grid is designed to appear as you approach the configured edge, and rapid movement can outpace the warning. Streaming may coincide with a boundary problem, but the available documentation does not establish that streaming universally disables boundary cues. Pause play, make the space safe, and check whether the cue is missing in the headset itself or only in a streamed game.
Why the boundary can seem to disappear
The grid is a proximity warning
Steam says Chaperone displays its grid as you approach the set boundary. If you are standing near the center of the play area, not seeing a grid is not by itself evidence of a fault. Steam also warns that the grid may not appear soon enough if you move quickly, such as when running or lunging. SteamVR Chaperone FAQ.
Streaming requirements do not explain boundary behavior
Steam Link has published compatibility requirements for streaming Steam games to supported headsets, including a Windows PC running Steam and SteamVR and a qualifying wireless network. Those requirements do not identify a boundary-visibility control or say that a weak router makes the boundary disappear. Compatibility varies by headset and software version, so check Steam’s current Steam Link support page for the exact requirements.
Meta describes its boundary as a perimeter mapped for the play area, with visual cues as the user or controllers approach it. Meta also notes that losing position tracking can be jarring. Its documentation does not say that streaming itself universally disables the boundary. Meta’s Boundary documentation.

What to check before resuming play
- Pause and clear the physical area. Move obstacles out of the play space and account for pets, floor or ceiling hazards, and overhead objects. Steam cautions that Chaperone does not identify objects and is not a substitute for planning a safe play area or having a spotter.
- Check whether the cue is absent everywhere or only in the streamed game. Look at the headset’s own environment, then approach the configured edge slowly. A missing grid while you are centered in the play area can be normal because the cue is proximity-triggered.
- Verify the play area and tracking. Confirm the headset still has the intended boundary setup and that position tracking is stable. Note any drift or tracking loss as well as whether the grid itself appears.
- Compare before and after starting the stream. If the boundary was present before launch, record whether it disappears in the headset environment, only in one game, or only with one streaming route. Identify the headset, streaming app, and PC VR runtime rather than assuming the app is responsible.
- Separate boundary symptoms from stream quality. A laggy or unstable stream and a missing boundary cue are different observations. Steam Link’s network requirements concern compatibility; Steam does not say that changing routers fixes boundary rendering.
- Capture details if it continues. Record the headset model, operating-system version, streaming application, PC VR runtime, whether the grid or passthrough transition is missing, and whether tracking drifts. The official sources do not establish a universal setting that resolves every case.
Distinguish the visual symptom
When describing the problem, be specific about what disappears. The boundary grid, a transition to passthrough, and stable position tracking are not the same thing. Compare the headset home with the affected game or runtime, and note whether the issue began only after streaming started. These distinctions help narrow down which system to investigate without treating a single user report as proof of a general Quest Link problem.
Passthrough is not a replacement for boundary safety. Meta says neither passthrough nor scene understanding replaces the boundary’s safety mechanisms. Meta’s Passthrough guidance.

What the available documentation does not establish
The official sources do not identify one Quest Link, Air Link, Virtual Desktop, or Steam Link setting that universally fixes a disappearing boundary. They also do not provide a model-by-model matrix of boundary behavior across PC VR streaming apps or a published rate for how often this happens. A forum post titled “Boundary disappears after starting Quest Link” reflects one user’s phrasing, not evidence that Quest Link generally removes boundaries: the report.
